They were three quarters of the way up when out of the corner of his eye Rob spotted what looked like a large hole in the side of the rock. He edged his way along until it could be seen clearly. The hole measured around twelve feet by eight and what was more apparent it was man made.
Rob shouted down that he’d found something interesting.
He got to the opening then waited for the rest to reach where he was. He went inside and the first thing to hit him was the smell of sulphur and urine. As he walked deeper into the cave he shone his torch around where the floor of the cave was covered in guano then he saw them hanging; thousands of bats.
Further up was another hole about ten feet across and a man made ladder next to it. Rob climbed up then waited and helped the others as they held their noses with handkerchiefs.
Once they were all inside they walked down the tunnel which was about 70 feet along. At the bottom of the tunnel it branched off in three directions.
“Stop a minute Robert called out as Eleanor flashed away with her camera.
“Listen can you here it?
“No what can you hear.
“I hear water.
“Yes said Eleanor and James I hear it too.
They followed the sound until they came to a huge underground cavern they could see light and they headed to wards it what they found was a huge underground pool.
The water trickled down from rocks into the pool below Rob tasted the water then smiled. “It’s fresh guys. James dived into the pool then the girls followed him.
They swam around then looked up where they could see the sky.
The water was so clear they could see the rocks below. Robert the then jumped in and was splashing about Robert was studying the rocks.
“Well our gold isn’t in this tunnel he said but the good news is we have enough water to get back.”
“We can fill the re-sealable bags, fill up the drum and our water bottles we should have more than enough to last us.”
“You guys stay here I’m going to check out the other caves.”
Rob ran back to where he’d entered then found the next passage he shone his torch all around the inside again it led to another cave but this time there was no water the rock revealed nothing again.
Disappointed he walked back then went into the last tunnel again he shone the torch this time the tunnel went further on; he turned right then came to a huge cave which had tools that McCreadie had used to dig out the gold. Then he saw another stone in the wall that was lose.
Rob worked it out of the recess then put his hand inside he found a wooden box which he opened. He shone the torch inside; again there was another letter and his heart sank.
