It took them four hours to climb to the summit and they could now see Mount Barren about an hours walk away. The quartz rock could clearly be seen even from a distance
Rob looked through the telescopic sight of his gun an scanned the landscape and to his surprise he spotted a rock wallaby he fired his gun and hit his target The rifle shot rang out across the Northern Territory. They would all be eating meat tonight he thought.
The other came up to him and asked why he’d fired the rifle. I just shot us dinner replied Rob.”
“Yes and you may have alerted those who were pursuing us as to our whereabouts too son.”
“Well now they know we have weapons and that we can defend ourselves if need be.”
Rob and James ran down to where they had shot the rock wallaby.
The wallaby must have weighed around fifty pounds; that would keep them in meat when cooked for at least three days. They all stopped whilst Rob skinned the animal with his bush knife and then cleaned the animal before finding wood for a fire and a made a shift like spit where chunks of the wallaby were placed to roast on the fire.
The smell coming from the meat was making everyone salivate. Eleanor used one of the packets of rehydrated beans with red peppers and sweet corn to accompany the meat.
Rob took the meat from the spit an hour later and using his bush knife he cut a piece of the meat and tasted it.
“Its ready folks said Rob with a satisfied smile. Rob portioned out the meat into the sealable bags then Eleanor Shared out the beans, peppers, and sweet corn.
“I never thought a wallaby could taste so good said Becky.”
“Well done Rob this is delicious said Eleanor as Rob added more on the spit and placed more wood on the fire.
It was now one o’clock and they had a good seven miles to walk to the bottom of Mount Barren.
If Robs calculations were right they should locate his grandfather’s gold tomorrow.
They packed away the ropes and other equipment then set off across the scrub to the base of Mount Barren.
They packed away the rest of the wallaby then dug a hole and placed the fur and bones of the wallaby into it then buried it. Then they covered it with stoned to deter other predators before setting out again.
They felt a lot stronger now with a good meal inside them and their pace increased.
However they were running low on water now and needed to find some quickly.
What they had would only last them a day at the most.
They spread out and searched for a water hole but found nothing.
“There has to be water here Rob how do all these plants grow?
“There will be a hidden source somewhere James; we just have to find it.
