8. Chapter 8

~~
Your dad always had something against you. Well, it wasn't always there. It started two years ago one night at dinner.

You were all sitting down at the dinner table eating tacos. That night only you, Dad, Eli, and Max were there. Earlier that day at school Max saw you with a boy. The two of you were sitting together at lunch, and you had spent almost the whole time laughing at his jokes. His name was Sterling and he was one of the few people who didn’t hate you.

Max would not shut up about it. “Is he your boyfriend?” Max asked you from across the table stretching out the last word. You shook your head and glared at him.

“No, of course not. I don’t even like boys.” You said nonchalantly. Your eyes widened as you realized what you just said.

“What did you just say?” Dad asked quietly. You looked down at the ground and started to tear up.

“I- I don’t like boys…” You replied shakily.

“Who do you like then?” He asked.

“Girls…” You whispered. A tear rolled down your face. You knew how disapproving Dad and Max were. Dad put his head in his hands.

“Leave.” He said without looking up. You and Eli both looked at him in shock.

“What?” You asked.

“You heard me. Leave.” He said angrily still not looking up. You got up and put your plate as tears streamed down your face. Eli got up and quickly followed. By the time he got out there you were getting your shoes on. He came out and walked over to you and wrapped you in a hug.

“I didn’t mean to say it.” You said into his shoulder. He already knew so you weren’t worried about him knowing.

“I know…” He said while rubbing your back comfortingly. The two of you stayed like that for a moment, but then you heard footsteps coming towards the door. You hid your face in Eli’s shirt as you heard him standing in the doorway.

“Get out now. I told you to leave before, didn’t I?” You could hear him ask almost tauntingly. You nodded and pulled away from Eli and got your other shoe on and walked out the door. Eli did the same.

“What do we do now?” You asked once he was standing next to you.

“Let’s go somewhere.”

“Like where?” you asked looking at him. He walked off the porch and you followed. He smiled at bit and wrapped his arm around you and continued walking.

“Wherever we end up.” he said quietly. You smiled and the two of you continued.

After a while of walking the two of you found yourselves at Canal Park. There were so many shops. Eli walked over to one of the stands. Ice Cream Shop the giant flashing sign above said. You smiled and followed him. He ordered for the two of you and he pulled out his wallet. “Where did you get your wallet from?”

“I grabbed it from my coat when we were getting our shoes on.” You smiled and took your ice cream cone when he handed it to you.

“Thank you.” you said smiling. “Not just for this, but for everything.”

“Your welcome.” He said smiling. He paid the person and the two of you continued walking. Down the street you saw a familiar building. You walked over to it.

“Hey Eli, isn’t this the place Wendy and Anna are at?” He walked over and looked at it.

“Yeah I think so. Should we go in?” he asked looking over and smiling at you when he said the last part.

“Yeah. Let’s go.” You said smiling back. You took his hand and walked into the building. When you got in you saw a group of people in the roller rink. When you looked a little longer you saw Wendy with a group of people including Anna. You and Eli walked over to rink and stood outside of it. Wendy saw you and quickly came over to you.

“Hi Addie and Eli!” she said happily.

“Hi Wendy.” You said smiling.

“What are you two doing here?” she asked. You looked down at your feet. Then you looked back up.

“I- I’m… gay…” You said whispering the last part. Wendy didn't say anything. You crossed your arms and looked at the floor. The next thing you knew you were being pulled into a hug by Wendy. You were shocked.  “You- you aren’t mad?” You said quietly to her.

“Of course not. Why would I be mad?” She asked back.

“Well,” you said while pulling away from the hug. “That’s kind of why we’re here… Dad kicked me out.” You said sadly.

“We’ll figure this out. Don’t worry.” she said sweetly. You smiled at her. “Do you know what you’re going to do for tonight?” she asked. You shook your head.

“Most of my friends are doing something tonight… the only person I can think of not having plans is Sterling…” you said. Eli’s eyes quickly moved over to you when he heard his name. “But he had a football game tonight, and I bet he’s tired.” you said sadly. Eli sighed quietly. “But I’ll call him anyways.” You said taking out your phone. You found his number and called him.

You thought you could feel Eli’s glare onto your phone. He never really liked Sterling. Sterling was always extremely nice to you. It was even better because he was in your grade and then usually you had someone to sit next to during lunch. Whenever you brought him up Eli always seemed to tense up.

“Hi Sterling.” you said into the phone, trying to seem happy.

“Hi Addie!” he said happily into the phone. “Is something wrong? You don’t sound okay.” He said a little concerned.

“No… not really.”

“Is it your dad again?” he asked, knowing you didn’t get along well with your father.

“Actually yeah. Would it be okay if I spent the night there?”

“Yeah. And, why? What happened?”

“Well, Dad kinda sorta kicked me out…” you said quietly.

“Oh my gosh! Are you okay? Here, hold on. Where are you?” He asked protectively.

“Yeah I’m okay. Right now I am at World of Wheels.”

“Okay I’ll be right there. Do not move a muscle.” he said the last part with little pauses between the words in the last sentence. You smiled and laughed a bit.

“Okay. I won't move.” You said while laughing a bit.

“I will be there soon.” he said. You heard some shuffling in the background and then he hung up. You smiled and then turned your phone off.

“So? What did he say?” Eli asked behind you.

“He’s going to be here soon.” you said as you turned around to face him. You noticed Eli’s smile falter. You sighed. “I don’t understand. Why don’t you like him?” You asked him as you walked over to him.

“I just… I just feel like he’s going to hurt you somehow.” he said quietly. You were surprised at what he had said.

“What? He has never hurt me. He’s never done anything wrong! Why do you think that?” you said angrily.

“I have seen what he does before.” he said.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“He isn’t a good person! I just don’t want you hang out with him.” He said. You turned away from him and tears started to form in the corners of your eyes.

“Why does this have to happen to me? My dad kicked me out, and now me and Eli are fighting… why?” you asked quietly. Eli heard you and walked over to you and put a hand on your shoulder.

“Please don’t be mad…” he said quietly. You turned to him.

“Leave me alone for right now.” You said angrily. You turned and then walked away from him. Eli stood there confused for a moment. You had never been this mad at him before.

When you walked out you saw Sterling running down the sidewalk. He ran up to you and he looked at you. “What's wrong?” he asked. You hadn’t been crying when you called.  Instead of answering you hugged him. He hugged you back. A couple seconds later the door burst open and Eli stepped out. You didn’t notice him and continued to hug Sterling.

As soon as Eli noticed you two his face fell. Sterling realized what happened when he  saw Eli. He then guided you away from the door and back to his house.

“Y-you would never hurt me, right?” you asked him quietly. He stopped and looked at you.

“I would never, ever dream of hurting you in anyway. You know that.” he said looking you in the eye.

“I-I know… it’s… it’s just that Eli said that you would hurt me…” you said shakily. He sighed.

“Don’t believe him. He probably just wants to protect you.”

“I know… let’s keep going.” you said and then continued walking. Sterling followed you and wrapped an arm arm your shoulder. He pulled you close to him and kissed your forehead.

When the two of you got there you went into his room and immediately fell asleep even though it was only eight.
