Who chose me for this life?

4. Chapter 4

When you were sleeping you dreamed about when Dad and Wendy first started to fight. It wasn’t like little fights, it was the kind of fights that generally ended relationships.

It was on a Sunday -a couple months ago- and Eli, Anna, and Alex had all gone to their dad’s house. You had been texting Eli about them fighting, and you had told him it was miserable. His protecting side kicked in.

You were sitting in the basement listening to music to block out the yells coming from upstairs. You heard footsteps coming down the stairs. “Max, go away… please.” You said, not looking up from your current position. You were sitting on the couch with your knees pulled up to your chest, and your knees resting on your knees.

“Nope, guess again.” a voice said from where you thought Max was standing. You looked up happily, recognizing the voice.

“Eli!” you said happily. You got up and went over to him. As you hugged him you thought aloud, “What are you doing here? Today is your day with your dad.”

“I told him that there was a very important thing going on, and that I needed to come home and help.” he said quietly into your hair. You pulled away and looked at him.

“I’m not that important. You didn’t need to skip time with your father just to make me happy. I am fifteen. I can handle myself.” you said in your defence.

“I just wanted to make you happy…” he said sadly, looking down at his feet. He started to walk up the stairs.

You quickly went to the stairs and grabbed his hand. “Please don’t leave…” you said desperately looking him in the eye. He looked back at you.

“Okay, but do you want to walk somewhere?” he asked.

“Sure. Let’s go upstairs and I’ll grab my wallet and we could get ice cream… Does that sound okay?” You asked, relieved that he wasn’t leaving.

“Okay, that sounds fun.” He said walking up the stairs. You followed him and walked to your room and grabbed your wallet. You quickly pulled on your black pair of converse and walked out the door with Eli following closely behind.

The two of you walked to the small ice cream shop in town. It was hot out that day and you were wearing a black band t shirt and black skinny jeans, so people stared at you. Eli glared at them, silently telling them to look away. You noticed this and giggled quietly. He heard you and smiled that you were happy.

When you arrived you had gone up and ordered. Eli also ordered and then you payed. You got your ice cream and sat down at a table, you enjoying your mint ice cream and him enjoying his chocolate.
