Not For Me

Kalei has just moved from Washington to Australia to get away from her problems. She thinks she'll never make any friends, and no one will like her. But on her first day of school, someone's major crushing. But what will happen when she's got her eye on his best friend?

56. Understanding

Kalei's POV

"You're mad at yourself?" I asked, to clarify. "Those are words I never thought I'd hear out of your mouth," I said under my breath, happy she didn't hear it.

"Yeah. I never thought I would ever say that." What can I say, great-ish minds think alike.

"What do you mean, you're mad at yourself, though?" I took my arm off her.

"I understand now, like, how much of a jerk I've been to you over the years. The lying, the backstabbing, everything." This is starting to sound like another apology I've heard her owe. I rolled my eyes and stood up.  "And I know I say that a lot," she sighed.

"Well what do you want me to do about it?" I groaned.

"Be my friend?" She flashed a weak smile.

"Hmph. I've been your 'friend' about a bazillion times now."

"I understand if you're done with me, if you don't believe me. But you're my last hope. Everyone else left me."

"Hurts, doesn't it?" I crossed my arms.

"Yes, I don't understand how you put up with that for so long."

"Not easy."

"I-I know," tears welled up in her eyes.

"Stop it, I've seen every trick you have."

"Which is why I've nothing to trick you with anymore. Everything I have, I've used on you. Regrettably."

She was starting to get to me. Tears welled in my eyes and my vision became blurry. "Jaden, just come here, you scrub." I opened my arms and she jumped into them and we hugged. It was nice to have my best friend back to how I remembered her.
