11. Lose of a Lifetime

My head was fuzzy when I awoke which was weird for a Monday mourning, I never party on Sundays. My bed was especially hard this morning, my blanket not as warm, and my pajamas not as soft. I could smell something sweet cooking over a fire. Weird? What would Grandpa be cooking over the fire so early in the morning?

I reached for my phone on the night stand but grabbed at air. I shot up to see where it was but a pain in my shoulder caused me to lay back down. I gazed around the room. It was definitely not my room. I don't remember how I got there. Now that I think about it I don't remember ever going to sleep or ending my walk with Gracie.

The shattering of a pot and followed mumbling caused me to turn my head to the door. A strange old woman entered the room with a bowl of the sweet smelling liquid. "My Queen! Your awake!" The woman said happily walking over to me.

"My Queen?" I muttered, wondering what was going on. "Okay! Emma, Mom! You guys can come out now!" I yelled thinking this was some kind of joke.

"Emma is not here, Melanie. You came alone." She looked toward the window, "Ugh, She will not leave that window over there for anything." And just like that a white, plastic, dragon popped through the window. Sure it looked realistic, but I knew better. There were no such things as dragons.

"Okay, what's really going on? I know you are behind this Emma! Just come out so you can gloat about how you made all this!" I yelled.

"Who is Emma?" The dragon asked, tilting its head. I let out a sigh of defeat, she wasn't going to give up anytime soon.

"So, what am I supposed to do?" I asked, thinking there must be some kind of catch to make her stop doing this.

"Well, um, you really aren't supposed to do anything, but you can do anything. You are the queen of Narnia"

"You keep saying queen, what is that supposed to mean." I began to sit up, "Ow, and can you tell me what happened to my shoulder?"

"You were shot with an arrow. You lost a lot of blood so I wouldn't expect you to remember. But I don't understand how am I confusing you, my queen?"

"Okay, listen I don't know how much my sisters paying you but I can pay you with... a... free gift-card for two smoothies." I have no money and no other way of payment. "What's you name."

"Oh, yes, you must not recognized me it has been so many years." That's when I realized two brown horns poking out of her gray curly hair and were her feet should be where black hooves covered in brown, fuzzy pants. Or were they pants? "It's me Brooke. You can't imagine the things I've seen over the past 200 years."

I scooted closer to the wall, "What are you? Where am I? What's going on? Where's Emma? Is Grandpa and Grandma in on this stupid trick?" I started to panic like I usually do and all the questions just poured out.

"Something isn't right. Something's wrong with you." She rubbed her head.

"Excuse me! Maybe something's wrong with you being in on this stupid scheme!"

She handed me the bowl of liquid, "Here drink this it should help you remember." My stomach growled as I grabbed the bowl. I had no idea what it was but it smelled so good. I drank the hole bowl in one gulp. A rush came over me and all my pain was gone. I sat up and felt my chest.

"How did you do that?" I said in awe.

"Your potion." She handed me a bottle with the sweet smelling, red liquid. "Boiling it makes it taste like all the best fruits combined." I turned the flask over in my hand. Brooke then handed me a belt with a small dagger strapped to it. "Do you recognize this?" I shook my head slightly as she handed it to me. "How about this?" She held up a bow and a quiver of arrows. Again I shook my head. "Oh dear, its worse than I thought. Hear put these on." She placed a pair of clothes at the foot of the bed and a pair of knee-high, black, leather boots on the floor.

After Brooke left the room I changed into the strange clothes: a pair of brown trousers, a blue, over-sized blouse, and a sparkly gold crown with flowers on it. I walked into the next room all dressed Brooke was standing at the door with the weapons. She motioned for me to follow her.

Outside there was a target set up. As Brooke handed me the bow the giant dragon came around the corner. Only it was plastic and it wasn't fake. It pounced towards me shaking the ground. I stumbled backward and screamed at the top of my lungs.

"Whoa, whoa kid quit your screaming. What happened to you?" The dragon just talked! It talked! "I realize we where never properly introduced. My name is Jura." The dragon bowed.

"Melanie." Okay this is so not happening. "This can't be happening." The dragon... or Jura... cocked her head.

"Please excuse her Jura she is experiencing a slight memory lose. I'm sure she will regain it." She handed me an arrow. I looked at target it was almost 50 feet away. "You do remember how to shoot right?"

"Only a little." I loaded the bow and aimed, with one eye open, at the target. I fired the arrow. It flew way above the target and slide across the ground. I looked at Brooke and Jura and raised one eye brow.

Brooke handed me another arrow, "Try again." I loaded the arrow again and aimed it at the target again. "Pull back to your lip. Use your upper body strength, flex your torso. Both eyes open. Aim slightly above the top ring." Brooke yelled. I followed each instruction. "Fire!" I released the bow string and watched the arrow fly. It hit dead center of the target. Both Brooke and Jura began clapping.

After more shooting and fighting up close with a dagger Jura started a fire. I mean literally she breathed in air and blew out fire onto some unsuspecting logs. I was the one clapping this time. Jura beamed with pride.

"Melanie," Brooke said sitting by the fire, "do you remember anything yet?"

"I'm sorry I don't." Both Brooke and Jura dropped their heads. Suddenly Jura light up.

"I know I can give you my memories from when we met that has to spark something." Jura jumped up and down.

"Well let's give it a try." Brooke seemed excited too.

"Alright come here." I stood and walked over to Jure. She bowed her down to my level. Something told me lean my head on hers. I held her head, which was the size of a full grown German Shepherd from nose to rear end, between my arms and leaned in my head. The instant our heads touched I saw flashes of a huge arena. I poked my head through the shadows and saw me I looked confused. A great sense of power tingled through my bones.

I pulled back my head after seeing the arrow sticking out of my chest thousands of feet off the ground. I hate heights. "We'll fix that." Jura said but not really she didn't even open her mouth. "We can communicate telepathically." She replied as if I asked. "Ok." I thought. Jura nodded as if she heard.

"So that's all I get to remember there should be more."

"I'm sorry that's the first time we met I don't know the rest of your memories."

"I can help with the rest." Brooke stepped in. She told me the story of how Emma and I along with two elven boys defeated the evil elven king and united Narnia thus becoming the queens. She told the story of meeting her and the pain I had suffered. Thank God I forgot that. She told of how we ruled for years and then left. The rest of the story was about an evil elf that wanted to take over our kingdom and was going to kill all of the dragons who threatened her authority.

I yawned as it became very dark. I was leaning on Jura's stomach. "It's best if we get to bed." Jura whispered in our mind. "Can we just sleep out here, please?" I thought laying on Jura's front arm. "As you wish, my queen." She wrapped her other arm and wing around me. As I drifted off to sleep I could hear Jura and Brooke talking.

"If she doesn't remember how will she defeat that reached elf? Us dragons are endangered enough you know."

"I'm more worried about how Emma and Holter will react to the news."

"Why did you leave out the part about the husband in your story?"

"She's had a bad day. She just lost a lifetime of memories it's best to take it slow. It will be hard for her to process having fell in love and getting married with out her remembering." I was to tired to think about what they were talking about but I could feel Jura's worry.
