33. Dreams

Melanie:

The sun was starting to set as I shot another arrow at the target before me. The arrow completely missed the target and flew into a near by tree. I grunted setting my bow down so I could fetch the arrow. When I got to the tree the arrow seemed to shift. There was a rustle in the bushes in front of me. Alsan's massive head popped out.

"Aslan!" I exclaimed running toward him.

"Walk with me." He said standing as I buried my face in his mane. Keeping one hand in his mane, I walked with him into the woods. The trees parted for us when we approached, and went back to their previous position once we passed. "It pains me to show this to you, but for your own good I must show you." He said as we walked farther into the forest. Then, a flash of light blinded me for a second, and when I was able to see again, we stood in a cell. There was a girl in it, laying with a torn dress on.

"Who are you?" I asked the girl, she didn't respond. Alsan sat down, his eyes filled with sadness. There was a jingling of keys and a man with many rings walked into the cell. He completely ignored Alsan and I, his attention on the girl. She lifted her head but her face was a blur. He asked her something and she replied, he slapped the girl than left the cell. I watched the girl rub her cheek and lay back down. I could see next the same elvish man was in the cell, dragging her out of the cell. Alsan and I followed close behind as they made their way into a big court yard filled with all different kinds of creatures and elves, all faceless. A man tore off the girls clothing and tied her to a post in the middle of the square. A long time passed as we watched until a man in a long cape walked in front of the crowd followed by a man with a metal tipped whip. He spoke some thing to her before the man with the whip began his torture.

I trembled as I watched, unable to look away. I felt a sharp pain in my back as I heard the first crack of the whip. I was on my knees. I looked up, my hands were tied to a post, my clothes ripped off my body. There was a second, a third, a fourth crack of the whip. I could feel the metal tipped whip cutting into my skin over and over again. I looked up to see Aslan crying, large tears falling over his fur and onto the ground. I passed out watching Aslan's face become fuzzy.

I jolted awake screaming, the cell was gone, Aslan was gone... But I couldn't calm down. I could feel the pain on my back, the searing pain of the whip slashing across my body. Holter bounded to my side, searching for any danger. Another memory came to me, of him carrying me to the griffin, holding me in his arms as we flew. I reached out toward him, wanting to feel safe again. He stroked my hair softly, rocking me back and forth like a baby. Tears fell from my eyes against my will. "What happened?" He asked softly. I broke out into a sob remembering the pain, not able to say the words. "Shhhh, it's okay Melanie, you're okay."

"I..." I tried to speak, but another sob broke through my throat, startling Holter. He held me tighter to him, and through all the tears in my eyes, I could see he was pained. "I remembered..." I staggered off not managing the words. He soothed me, brushing my hair off my sweaty forehead, then kissing it softly.

"It's okay Melanie; I'm here." he whispered, rocking me back and forth. My sob died out to only tears streaming down my face, and eventually those stopped too. I slowly stood up, touching my back gently to see if it still hurt. It didn't. Holter watched me concerned as I tried to grasp the concept that it was just a dream but it had felt so real. I grabbed my bow and shot at a nearby target. The arrow went dead center. I sighed with relief. Then grabbing my dagger I started swinging it around hitting imaginary dummies. Eventually I started to see people that I would spar and defeat. One after another the imaginary bodies dropped. I heard someone come up from behind me. I held the dagger to the person's throat.

"Holter!" I snapped back into reality as I held the dagger to Holter's throat.

"Woah, woah, there." he held is hands up in defense.

"I'm so sorry I didn't see you!" I dropped the dagger.

"Nothing wrong with a little training." I stepped back from him, sitting on a log. He sat next to me; playing with his thumbs, and I could tell he wanted to talk to me, but didn't know how to start."What was your dream about?" he asked after a while. I paused, debating on whether or not  to tell him.

"It was just another memory." He looked concerned. Jura walked over and sprawled out onto the ground. She rubbed her back along the ground like a dog. I giggled at her. She was about the size of a small plane. I caught out of the corner of my eye Holter staring at me, a smirk on his face. I ignored it, not wanting to give away that I saw him looking at me.

Every night after that I either went for a run, trained with my dagger, or shot at a target. When I tired to sleep I only tossed and turned for an hour. With each passing day I felt myself getting stronger, faster, and more distant. I tried to avoid Holter as much as I could. I felt so bad for the poor guy. I wish I could help him but I just don't know what to do. It was four days since that terrible dream.

"You look awful." Jura said. "Have you not been sleeping well."

"She hasn't been sleeping at all!" Holter said walking up to us. He looked both angry and worried. "I've watched you go out every night, you have not slept once in four days!" I tried to avoid eye contact with either of them and just looked at my hands. Holter came closer to me. "You've been avoiding me, and I don't know if you've been eating either." As if on cue my stomach growled. "Something is wrong with you. Please, if you don't want my help please take Jura's or Brooke's." I caught a glimpse of his face. He didn't seem angry anymore only sad and tired.

I didn't know how to respond, I didn't want to but I forced the words out. "I'm fine." I wasn't fine, I was the opposite of fine. I could even detect the lie. Holter just looked at me in defeat.

"Please! I love you and I want you to be happy." Holter fell on his knees, his head down so I couldn't see his face.

A roar echoed off the trees as Maulduen descended from the clouds; immediately Jura straightened and roared in response. Holter stood and turned his back. Romnly swooped down from behind Maulduen, landing with a soft thump. Maulduen landed smoothly and Emma jumped off his shoulder, landing with a grunt; Patten took the "easy" way and slid down Maulduen's wing. I walked over to Emma who smiled, whipping dirt off her knees. "Where is Tomi?" I asked

"We left her on the ship with her boyfriend." She said with a smug look.

"Boyfriend?" Holter asked walking up behind me.

"Hutch, her second in command and boyfriend now."

"Did I know a Hutch? Or is he new?" I asked my eyebrows furrowed together.

"He's new, you couldn't have known him before anyways - he's human." Patten said wrapping an arm around Emma's waist, kissing her hair. I watched at Emma melted into his touch, a smile spreading across her face. I looked back at Holter, and noticed something I don't think he wanted me to see - his feelings were plain on his face as if it were a book, and he wanted to do the same with be, but held back for fear of scaring me. I lowered my eyes from his, my breath shallow.

"Well that's good." I said without any emotion before walking off toward Jura.

I watched Holter whisper something to Emma and Patten, they all looked at me concerned. I rolled my eyes and looked away. After a few minutes Emma walked over to me. "Hey, are you okay?" she put a hand on my shoulder and spun me around to face her. I hope she couldn't see the dark circles under my eyes. I didn't want to answer, didn't want to lie again. I shook my head and looked at the ground. Emma embraced me in a warm hug she planted a kiss on the top of my head. She walked me over to the fire and watched me eat. At night I could feel her watching to make sure I went to sleep. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't. Visions of my dream kept coming. Jura stood up and hovered over me.

"Can I tell you a story." I rolled over and looked into her beautiful blue eyes. I nodded and sat up. She sat down and curled around me. I saw Emma, Patten, and Holter sit up. Maulduen didn't get up but he focused on Jura's face. "The first two faces I saw when I hatched were that of my mother and my father. They loved me with all there hearts and I loved them. I was maybe five years old at the time but still full grown when I discovered humans."

She paused and took a deep breath, "I came upon their village and me, being young, decided to investigate. At the sight of me the brought out there weapons. I flew back to my home, thinking I had lost them, but I didn't. My parents protected me and it cost them their life. They broke my wing so I couldn't fly away and tied me with ropes. Since I'm small it only took about nine horses to pull me, to drag me. They put me in that arena, tortured and starved me. One day they put a man in with me. He held a spear. I was afraid so I didn't attack but from above the audience started throwing rocks. He lunged, with one swipe with my tail I knocked him against the wall. He wasn't wearing armor so he died on impact. This happened about once a week for however long I was in there. They started calling me "Keiro", death. I lost hope. Then one day they put a small, timid girl in there. I could tell right away that she was royalty and she doesn't belong in there. Instead of doing what the usual do she dropped her weapon. She showed me kindness instead of hatred. She helped me escape. I thought love was impossible to find since I lost my parents but I found it here with you."

She glanced at Maulduen who seemed to be listening. "I found it with the help of my friends. Melanie, please we all love you." I wrapped my arms around her snout. She picked me up and laying me down covered me with her wing. I fell asleep in an instant. I had no dreams that night.
