18. Days on the Ship

Tomi:

"I wouldn't try to escape if I were you..."

"Your coming with us Tomi." Gracie said her eyes fierce, Finel was nodding her large head.

"No I am not. I know I made fun of Hutch last night, but I am quite afraid of him." I said sitting on my bed. "So you two go ahead, bring back a rescue crew when you get to the main land!" I said waving my hand like a good bye. Gracie rolled her eyes and walked out of the room followed by Finel. "Oh, and I don't want to get burned!" I yelled after her.

"You wouldn't have gotten burned, I wouldn't have let that happen, all you would have to do is play dead!" I shook my head and slammed the door behind them. "Ugh!" I yelled. There was a knock on the ceiling. I knocked back, as if to say "I'm all right!" another knock came, and I walked out of my cabin, walked up the steps, and knocked on the door to Hutches cabin.

"Yes?" He asked.

"Why are you knocking on the floor?" I asked leaning on the door frame.

"Because I want to say good job, you are not going to go through with the plan those two dogs were coming up with." He smiled a slight smile and walked pass me, closing the door. "Anyway, breakfast is in 20, I better get going." He said going back to his formal self. I sighed and walked back down the steps, following him. When we got to the deck, I went over to Lanna's cabin and knocked on the door.

"Yes?" she asked opening up the door. "Oh! It's yu'! I w'sn't expecting you till later!" she exclaimed, opening the door wider for me to enter.

"Yeah, I was wondering if you had any other clothes besides dresses, I don't feel very comfortable in this." I said patting the white fabric.

"Aye, I thought you would be com'n sometime 'r another." She said smiling, throwing a pare of trousers and a white shirt at me, along with boots, and a heavy black long coat. I quickly changed into them, and found the pants a little too big, as well as the shirt, the shoes fit well enough, as did the coat.

"The clothes don't fit." I said holding up the pants.

"I only wear dresses - those are Hutche's." she smiled.

"How did you get Hutche's clothes?" I asked trying to figure out a way to keep the pants up.

"I stole th'm fr'm h'm a while back." She laughed, I was stunned.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because, well, I got a cr'ush 'n him, and well... yeah." she said than taking scissors started to cut and resize the pants till they fit right by sewing them up after they were cut. It didn't look to bad, only it sewing marks looked weird. We did the same with the shirt than I finished dressing it was time for breakfast.

"Thanks Lanna." I said limping out of the room, followed by her. We made are way to the dinning room and sat down in our normal spots. Hutch came in last, like always, and walked to the head of the table and sat down. Captain will not be coming. We started eating, it was alright, not as good as last night, but good enough. After breakfast Lanna left me to do her chores around the ship, and I was left, to do - nothing. I walked around the ship, counting the men to see how many there were on this thing. I got to over 100 on the deck, but there were probably hundreds more below deck. I saw John on the higher level of the deck shouting off different commands that I didn't understand.

"Where did you get those clothes?" Hutch asked coming up behind me. I turned to face him.

"Lanna gave them to me..." I said, blushing.

"They were mine...." He said looking at the coat and shirt.

"I didn't know, I'm sorry." I said, "I can change if you want them back."

"I don't think they will fit me anymore, but thanks. And they fit you fairly well, you look like a real pirate. But can you fight like one?" He asked walking away, I limped after him, trying to keep up with his ginormous stride.

"No. I can tell you that right now. I tried sparring with the high king and that is why I'm limping." I said.

"Than swords aren't your weapon, everyone has there preferable weapon." he took me down three flights of stairs and down a long a corridor into a large room full of weapons.

"So let me guess... this is where you murder me... a good place. Three stories down, in a room full of weapons, and no one around to save me - the crew definitely might, but they are all scared of you right? So it wouldn't matter anyway." I said walking around the room, a smile on my face.

"Shut up and pick a weapon." Hutch said picking up two throwing knives.

"Fantastic choice to kill me with, small like me, and sharp like my words." I laughed looking at all the weapons. "So how many have you killed in this room?" I asked picking up a long dagger.

"None." Hutch said aiming one knife at the wall.

"Well fine, thats not fun, but hey, who am I to judge." I set down the dagger and walked around the room again. There were many weapons of all shapes and sizes. So many swords, all making me want to cringe in pain. But there was this one weapon, hanging on the far wall. It was a staff with swords on both ends. It looked taller than me, and I picked it up. It wasn't that heavy, but heavy enough. "I like this one!" I said swinging it around my head.

"It fits you. Come on. Captain wants me to train you." I nodded.

"Of course he does." We walked in silence for a while when Hutch broke it.

"So where did you get the clothes?"

"Lanna.... She sorta has a crush on you."

"I know." He said looking back at me, a small smile on his face.

"Do you like her, or..."

"I don't know." It was silent again. We climbed the stairs. There was a training area set up, with practice dummies and targets.

"Okay, let's get started." he said, than taking the weapon from my hands spun it around in a very intricate way, then threw it like a spear at a target, hitting it right in the center.

"Wow." I said clapping my hands. "When can I learn that?" I ask. He didn't answer. "Fine. Well, what can I learn?"

"The basics. I've been training for years to do that." I walked over and pulled the weapon out of the target and walked back to Hutch.

"Show me." I said handing him the weapon, he handed it back to me. "I want you to show me how to do it!" I said, Hutch nodded.

"I will! Just calm down!" He said walking toward the stairs. "I need to get mine though." and with that he left the training area. I swung the weapon around, trying to copy what Hutch did - but slower, then threw it at the target. It didn't hit the center, not even close. It hit the top of the target and then popped into the air, landing behind me.

"Oops!" I yelled turning to pick it up. Hutch had it in his hand, as well as an identical weapon. "Sorry Hutch!" I yelled again.

"It's alright - a valiant try though. You just need to focus on your aim." Hutch handed me my weapon. "Follow my moves." I nodded, and Hutch started on a new move, one easier than the other one, but still challenging. I copied his every move, down to his facial expressions. Hutch stopped the move laughing a small laugh. "Stop that! I can't focus with you doing my facial expressions!" He said, his two different colored eyes shining.

"I can't help it! Your facial expressions are really funny!" I said laughing. "Okay! Just continue! I promise that I won't do it again." I continued to laugh.

"Fine." And he continued to do the move, I copied him again, but he was more calm than before. He started to move faster and faster, until we were to the move he was doing before. And then the throw... Missed again!

"Don't worry you'll get the hang of it, with practice." Hutch said once I practiced the move multiple times. "We'll break for the day and continue tomorrow." Hutch left with his weapon in hand down the stairs and into his cabin. I was sweaty and out of breath and took my weapon to my room.

Two weeks later when I came on deck after a long day of training and doing chores, the sun was beginning to set and it glistened on the water. I climbed up a ladder to the crows nest above and sat to watch the slow setting sun and the men working below. They never seemed to tire, and always had something to do.

"Beautiful isn't it?" I jumped to see Hutch climbing the ladder. I pulled my knees to my chest, resting my chin on them.

"What are you doing up here?" I asked as he sat beside me.

"I always come up here, it helps me think. And that view is amazing I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I love the ocean, how it makes everything sparkle like diamonds, how it makes the boat sway gently, the spray of the water." I glanced at Hutch who was staring out at the sea, his different colored eyes reflecting the sun. He seemed so free, so unlike himself. I know what he meant by the scenery was amazing and the swaying helped my aching muscles relax. I wanted to stay there all night but my stomach began growling.

"Hungry are you?" Hutch said returning to his normal self, his voice stern again. "Go down and eat, I'll be there soon." I left without him. no wonder he was always late, he never wants to leave that view. When I arrived at the dinning hall Lanna was sitting there, her hair perfect and she was in a nicer dress.

"What's this for?" I asked sitting next to her.

"Oh, w'll Hutch ask'd me out two day's ago, 'n I j'st w'nt to look good." She blushed smiling widely.

"That's awesome!" I said hugging her. He must of asked her out after our training session the other day.

"I am r'lly happy right now..." She said and started to eat. "I wond'r where he is now?" She asked herself.

"I saw him up on the crows nest earlier, so he might be up there." She nodded in agreement and continued to eat. Hutch walked into the room like ten minutes later and sat at the head of the table, not even looking at Lanna or I. Dinner ended and I went to my cabin to go to sleep.

A storm woke me up in the middle of the night, rocking the boat back and forth wildly. I fell off my cot onto the ground with a thump. OW. I quickly ran outside onto the deck to see the crew trying to keep the ship steady, Hutch and John were on the top level of the deck yelling instructions to the crew, only to have to repeat it because the words were caught in the wind. I 'ran' up the stairs and up to Hutch. "What's going on?" I asked.

"Well, there is a storm!" He yelled, almost falling on me.

"I know that! But what can I do?" I asked pushing him upright. He shrugged, and almost fell the other way.

"Just go back inside, I don't think there is anything you can do!" He yelled. I sighed and helped right himself again. "You can... Go up to the crows nest and see if there is an opening that we can get out of this storm with!" I nodded, and this time fell on Hutch, which made him fall over too. He pushed me off him and in the direction of the crows nest, I ran to it and started to climb the slippery ropes. Once I was up there I could see for miles, and there was clear blue sky to the right of the ship. I climbed back down the ropes, almost falling to my death a few times, and ran back to Hutch.

"There is an opening to the right!" I yelled, he nodded, pouring a bucket of water over the edge of the ship. He dropped the bucket and went to John, who then yelled instructions to change the direction of the ship. Hutch walked back over to me.

"Thanks!" he yelled, I nodded. "You should go back inside now... go find Lanna or something!" He yelled, and I nodded again. I walked to Lanna's cabin and knocked on the door.

"Yeah?" She asked opening the door.

"Can I come in?"

"Aye!" She yelled over the storm. I walked into her room shaking off the rain. We stayed in her room for about a couple hours, not talking about anything in particular, then there was a knock on the door. Lanna opened it to find Hutch standing there, a smile on his face.

"Get your weapons, we are going on land!" He said taking Lanna's hand. We walked out onto the deck, and I ran to get my weapon.

We took three small ships to the island, and walked into the forest surrounding the forest, John in the lead. I followed Hutch and Lanna, holding my weapon at ready. We walked for miles and miles until we came upon a large hut. John whispered instructions to the crew members who came. I followed Hutch and Lanna to the south end of the hut and looked through the windows. An elderly woman was sitting there knitting with grey yarn. "What are we doing? We better not kill that woman!" I whispered.

"No, we aren't going to kill her... only knock her out." Hutch said, his two different colored eyes shinning. We went around to a back door and quietly entered without a sound.

"Well isn't this a surprise!" The woman said turning to look at us. She clapped her hands and all of our weapons flew out of our hands and chains flew out of the walls and ground and entangled us, pulling us against different walls or posts. All the men that came with us flew threw the door, being pulled by chains too. I cursed. Which I rarely do, but this seemed like an okay moment to do it.
