Following Light

'They give off a beautiful light that bathes us all in a glorious glowing embrace. We stand idly by and watch them, if only to catch a fleeting glimpse of their face as they talk to their friends or walk away from where we idly exist, decaying moths flittering around their iridescent glow.' Mina Carsanova glows much brighter than the others, the Passed following her as a child follows its mother. When tragedy happens, it would appear that some lights are far too powerful to ever be snuffed out. A story about death, life and a goodness that is all too hard to find.

1. Prologue

Some people have a large Following. They give off a beautiful light that bathes us all in a glorious glowing embrace. We stand idly by and watch them, if only to catch a fleeting glimpse of their face as they talk to their friends or walk away from where we idly exist, decaying moths flittering around their iridescent glow. We are simply the whisperings in their ear, the reminder of the veil that separates the living from the Passed, the soft glide of an arm as we worship the light of their existence.

These few are special. It is not so strange to see us gathering around loved ones, regardless of the strength of their glow. After all, we are simply the Passed, we do not lose ourselves as we enter through the veil. We simply lose our physical existence. We are neither trapped nor free. We are not the angels of the tales, nor the demons of the religious texts. We are the population of the planet, where the Passed will always outnumber the truly living. We are the congregation, wholly dependent on the light that preaches to us without their knowledge. We desire the good, the pure, the innocent souls, and we bathe in their glorious righteousness, so untampered by ego or corruption. We recoil from the darkness that emanates from those already lost to the shadows of their soul, their unseemly horror pouring from them in torrents, eager in their desire to harm others. We must protect the light, though the light will always remain unaware of its protectors.
