Will to Survive

In a competition to the death, 10 people must compete to survive as long as possible in the wild. Who will fall in love? Who will live? Who will die? Who will betray the others? All will be revealed.

2. Kegan's POV

"Mr. Rought. Mr. Rought, are you paying any attention?" a voice echoed in my head. I snapped to attention to see my English professor, Mrs. Schwults, looming over me, her beady gray eyes glaring into my soul. "I'm sorry professor. What was the question?" I asked sheepishly. Mrs. Schwults rolled her eyes, but she repeated the question.

"Which of the following is an English allegorical epic that features the Red Cross Knight and Gloriana? The Pilgrim's Progress, Orlando Furioso, The Faerie Queene, Romance of the Rose, or Paradise Lost?" I stared at her blankly, searching my mind. "C'mon, I know this!" I muttered to myself. Then, it hit me. "The Faerie Queene," I said confidently, straightening a little. "Correct. Don't let me catch you daydreaming in class again, Mr. Rought," she said grudgingly. I sighed and nodded.

When class was over, I grabbed my books and ran out as fast as I could. English has been my least favorite class ever since I was little. I spotted my friend Kara at the other end of the hallway. Her strawberry blonde hair was tied up into a tall ponytail and she seemed to be looking for someone. She spotted me and walked towards me swiftly. "There's someone here to see us and some other students up in the office," she said. I raised an eyebrow at her. "What if I don't want to go?" I asked. "Kegan..." she moaned. I chuckled. "Kidding. Come on, let's go."

We weaved through the large crowd of students until we reached the office. I held open the door for Kara and followed her in. There were eight other students, four boys and four girls, the vice principle, and a tall African-American man. I recognized my room mate Jack and his girlfriend, Amy.  The principal and the stranger exchanged glances and the man stepped forwards. "My name is John Smith. You can call me Slim," he said in a deep, gravelly voice. One of the boys snickered. He had blonde hair and wore glasses like mine. The guy next to him, a much older man with brown hair and eyes, glared at him, but a small smile tugged at his lips.

Slim cleared his throat and continued. "You have all been selected to take part in a competition. It will be televised, and it will be dangerous," he said, giving us all a meaningful look. Kara raised her hand tentatively and Slim nodded in her direction. "What if we preferred to stay here and not go?" she asked, a little fearfully. Slim smiled. "No, you don't have a choice. You have all been assigned roles for your expedition. The goal is to survive in a rain forest located in Costa Rica," he said, his eyes shining.

"What are our roles?" The guy who had snickered earlier stepped forward, his arms crossed. Slim pulled out a clipboard. He handed us each a sheet of folded paper. I unfolded mine and my blood ran cold. The words 'First in Command' were printed across it. "There's got to be a mistake," I muttered. Slim shook his head. "The Judges don't make mistakes. Your roles are based off of your intelligence, skills, and personality," he said. One kid stepped forward. "Mine says, 'Excavator, but he's useless'. What's that supposed to mean?" he sneered. Slim rolled his eyes and continued. "You all depart for Costa Rica tomorrow. Good luck!"

Later that day, Jack and I were back in our dorm room. Jack sat on my bed while I paced. "I can't be the leader! It's...it's not me. I always follow or stay on my own!" I said, rubbing the back of my neck nervously. Jack opened his mouth to say something, but decided against it and closed it again. "What's your role?" I asked, sitting next to him. Jack grinned. "I got excavator, tracker, and protector. They must think I'm a frondeur," he said, flexing his 'muscles'. "Shut up you big doofus," I laughed, shoving Jack off the bed. He sat up and crouched so only his eyes and forehead showed. He wiggled his eyebrows and went cross-eyed. I resisted the urge to laugh and pushed his head down.

"Owie," he whined, sticking out his bottom lip. You big goofball, I thought, grinning. I loved having a younger, goofier guy like Jack as a roommate. He always made me feel better. "We should probably get some sleep. It's going to be a big day tomorrow," I said, yawning. He nodded and 'passed out', flopping down onto the floor. I rolled my eyes and picked him up by the legs, dragging him over to his bed. I caught a smile playing on his lips and I laughed. He wrestled out of my grip and jumped up, his shoulders shaking with laughter.

After we both got ready for bed, Jack got under his covers with a flashlight and a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I chuckled and climbed under my own covers. Thoughts still whirled in my head as I fell asleep.
