2. Chapter Two

That’s how I originally wanted to start this story, you know like at the beginning of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. I mean it’s true isn’t it ? We’re all dying, it’s just the rate of decay that’s the critical factor. Are our lives pre-set when we get them, set to expire at a certain moment in time? Or do we determine when they stop working? It’s something I’ve pondered these last few months. We’ve all read the books where humans are fitted with clocks in their wrist that tick down the moments until they cease to live. Imagine if we could know the exact moment of our death. I guess we’d all try to cheat the moment.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s contemplated what life and death means and the fragile link between both of them. Does death mean the end to all consciousness or does it mean that something else replaces it? Most of our energies go to living life to the full, to experiencing all that life deals. We rarely sit back and envisage what happens when we draw our last breath on this earth.

It’s only when we’re faced with a life changing or should that be a life ending event, that the full gamete of emotions and thoughts are unleased in our minds. That moment when we consider our mortality. Does it change the way that we view our lives? I guess until you go through one of these occurrences the urgency to change or think isn’t something one muses about much.

So do we have a sell by date or does there exist somewhere a pre ordained plan that no matter what you do you’re unable to change the direction? I’ve no doubt that if we could we’d opt to extend our lives if we possibly could. Maybe by a change of diet or by having some sort of medical procedure.

Let’s start with an example. Cancer is one of those diseases that affects huge amounts of people. Medicine has come along in the last few years that has made surviving the disease better for most, but we still haven’t irradiated it, we still don’t understand it. Somewhere in our bodies our cells mutate, divide differently away from the norm and cancerous cells are formed. Left to their own stratagems these will become dominant over our normal cells, digesting them and spreading their influence across our bodies until they finally cause the fleshy container of our bodies to fail in some way.

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to who it hits. It affects those completely health as much as those who don’t care for their health. Exercise and fitness don’t stop it attacking. Is it predetermined in our DNA that we’ll come down with it or maybe it’s just a random fluke act that throws our bodies, and eventually our minds into despair.

Anyway maybe I should restart this story with a more positive message…
