Haze

‘A deliberate man-made tragedy and crime’

‘Vandalism against society and the environment’

Minister Vivian Balakrishnan spoke strongly

Hoping there would be improvement

That grey smoke darkened our blue sky

Protected our noses each time we commuted

PSI levels rocketed each time

Yet a ban to burn seemed moot

Students still braved the conquest for education

Some stayed home like it was an epidemic

Quarantined in class for recess and assembly

One cough or sneeze made teachers panic

In the sanctuary of home

Windows shut, air conditioned switched on

N95 masks were used like tissue

Air purifiers bought by the ton

We clustered around the television

Fingers crossed … was there a chance?

Solemn newscaster, “The 24 hour PSI is 300.

Schools are closed,” Time to dance!

The messages spread as fast as fire

Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, the news was ablaze

School is closed but work still goes on!

Parents were left in a daze

The day school was cancelled we had a test

Unprepared, I was filled with fear

I asked my friend, “Can haze save us all?”

Her calm reply, “I have faith in Indonesia.”
