The Legacy of Atlantis - The Awakening of Evil

Magic.

Is it real? Is it a myth? There are people all over who will argue both cases. Some people will even tell you that magic is science we are unable to comprehend. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what other people tell you. All that matters is what I tell you right now.

I come from a world thought long gone by you and your people. It's better that way. For hundreds of years, the planet of New Atlantis has prospered in peace and, well...prosperity. That all changed when I ventured into a whole new world of forces that were beyond both my control and understanding, and now chaos lurks around every corner.

Believe it or not, I'm the only one who can stop it.

My name is Jason Wolf and in order for me to succeed, I need you to believe in the impossible. Trust me when I say that the fate of both our worlds hang in the balance.

14. What I Want you to See

Base 21, seven leagues beneath the Odysseun ocean

The Asphodel Zone

1st August 2017

Time Unknown

Alex, Sam, Dimitri and Bastian were navigating the many corridors and passageways of Base 21 at a brisk jog. Dimitri headed the group and was running with his eyes shut, latched onto the trail of living minds with his own and following the scent like a bloodhound.

"Dimitri!" Alex puffed. "Are you sure you know where you're going?!"

"Positive!" Dimitri shouted back over his shoulder. "The thoughts are getting louder...can't you hear them?"

Telepathy was not a skill that Alex was particularly competent in - he'd always felt that thoughts should remain private.

"No, we can't hear them!" Sam said, irritated. "That's why we need you!"

They hit the end of the corridor, made a left and set off at a sprint. "It's the next right," Dimitri said with conviction. "I can sense them...it's the next right."

Alex was the first person to turn the corner, but skidded to a halt. "You!" he gasped in shock and anger.

Standing at the end of the corridor twenty paces away, in front of a round, metallic door that was rolling shut, was Adam, as large as life. "Cassidy," he said mockingly. "We meet again."

"Where's my brother?" Dimitri barked.

"Oh yeah," Adam chuckled. "I almost forgot about him and his loser mate Jason. They actually thought that they could take me on! Isn't that cute?"

Dimitri, Alex, Sam and Bastian were now spreading across the width of the corridor, giving themselves the most room possible. "What did you do to Jason?" Bastian shouted. "You'd better not have-"

"I didn't murder him if that's what you're afraid of," Adam said, drawing closer by a few paces. "Or your brother," he added to Dimitri. "No, I have very clear orders to take you all alive. Unless, of course, you refuse to cooperate. In which case I’m to dispense of you. And this is your last chance to cooperate.”

"You'll have a job of doing that," Sam remarked. "I have this nasty habit of setting fire to anything that tries to touch me."

"Just try it," Adam smiled crookedly. "I happen to think that I'm far more skilled than all of you put together."

"Oh really?" Alex asked, stepping forward.

"Alex, don't," Bastian warned.

"He murdered my mentor," Alex snapped. "My best friend, in cold blood. I can't let that pass. This guy is mine."

"What are you gonna do, air condition me to death?" Adam roared with laughter. "Don't make me laugh. I've bested you once already, Cassidy, and don't think I won't do it again. Not to mention that I also have a whole array of tricks that you don't even know about yet."

"Yeah?" Alex spat, striding down the hallway toward his assailant.

"Yeah," Adam smirked. "For example...how can you fight me...if you can't even see me?"

The air around Adam rippled and suddenly, he vanished. Almost like somebody had taken an eraser and rubbed him out of reality.

Alex started, shocked, and his second of hesitation cost him dearly.

A fist smashed into Alex's face, knocking him onto his back several paces away. He grunted in pain as his lip split and blood ran down his chin. Ten feet away, Adam's invisibility trick wore off and he reappeared, grinning from ear-to-ear. "You alright down there?"

Alex reacted faster than Adam anticipated. He threw up both his arms and fired twin bursts of energy, which glowed blue. The jets of light collided with Adam's shins before he had time to act and he suddenly felt a blast of cold and heard the cracking of ice setting in.

Adam glanced down and saw that his legs from the calf down had been secured inside a huge chunk of ice, preventing him from moving. "Why, you-!" Adam cursed and raised his arms to blast Alex apart.

Alex followed up with two more jets of energy, which hit Adam's forearms and formed heavy ice gauntlets that weighed his arms down immensely and forced Adam into a compromising position. He was unable to move his legs, and his arms were forcing him to bend over at the waist.

"Nice one!" Dimitri crowed.

Alex's eyes glowed golden as he used his Ch'i, pumping raw Magic around his body to supercharge his movements, and smashed a power-driven uppercut directly into Adam's face. The icy prison that Alex had created exploded spectacularly as Adam was ripped from the ground and tossed into the air. He crashed against the ceiling, and then thudded down against the ground with a sickening crunch.

There he lay, still and unmoving.

Alex approached warily.

"Is he...dead?" Bastian asked.

"I don't think so," Alex shook his head as he surged forward, arms raised.

"You thought right," Adam said coldly. Alex suddenly found himself flying backwards, under psychokinetic influence.

Dimitri, Bastian and Sam scattered like roaches as he rocketed backward and crashed heavily into the wall before slumping to the ground in a heap.

"Alex!!" Sam cried.

Twenty paces away, Adam was getting to his feet. There were several cuts and grazes marring his face, and his left arm was definitely dislocated. Yet as Dimitri, Bastian and Sam watched, the cuts and grazes faded, and Adam's arm seemed to reposition itself with a crunch. Adam smiled at their stunned faces. "It's rude to stare," he quipped.

"But how did you...?" Sam trailed off. "Healing yourself is supposed to be impossible! The only person who can do it is-"

"Mr Wolf?" Adam supplied. "Allow me to let you all in on a little secret. You're all special, in ways that you don't yet know. You possess certain 'abilities', which allow you to use specific types of your gifts to their fullest, whether that be telepathy or pyromancy.

"Well I'm like you," Adam grinned. "And my 'thing' is the power to absorb the special abilities of people like us through physical contact. Like Jason, and Mr Romanoff."

"No way!" Dimitri shouted.

"Yes way," Adam smiled. "Explain this!" he suddenly shouted, pointing his palm in their direction. Suddenly there was a bang, a blaze of electric blue light and the air exploded.

A bolt of lightning snapped out of Adam's palm and cut through the air toward them, and probably would've killed them all if not for Sam's quick thinking. She threw up her right arm at the last second and let off a blast like a gun as a fireball about the size of a football exploded from her arm and collided with the lightning in mid air.

Adam, Dimitri, Bastian and Sam all ducked just in time to avoid the resulting explosion, which erupted outward in a disc of destruction that ricocheted off of the armoured walls and collided into itself in mid-air, resulting in a spectacular implosion.

The smoke began to clear, and the four of them began to get back to their feet. "Adam!" Dimitri called. "This ends now!!"

"You read my mind!" Adam shouted back. His fingers began to charge up with electricity and before Dimitri could act, a second bolt of lightning snapped out and hit Dimitri squarely in the chest. Dimitri sagged to his chest, screaming in agony as the high voltage caused his body to convulse.

"Dimitri!!" Bastian shouted, but didn't advance.

There was a sharp bang as Dimitri's entire head exploded spectacularly. Blood and pulverized brain splattered the walls and floors and Adam cut off the flow of electricity sharply. There was silence as Dimitri's beheaded body staggered for a second and then keeled forward, thudding pathetically against the ground.

Sam screamed a terrible, shocked, traumatized scream full of pure unadulterated terror. Even Adam was slightly taken aback, though he quickly recovered. "Now look what you made me do," he said calmly, blowing smoke from his fingers.

"You monster," Bastian said quietly, his face white. He began to step forward. "Your murderous, soulless devil! How could you kill an innocent boy in cold bl-"

Bastian was cut off as Adam slashed his index finger horizontally though the air. There was a sharp snick as the top of Bastian's spine was snapped apart psychokinetically. Adam made a slight gesture and Bastian was thrown sideways into the wall where he crumpled to the ground in a heap.

Sam's face was as white as paper. She backed up, hands over her mouth, and stumbled over her own feet before letting loose a blood-curdling scream.

Adam gave her a smile that said, 'I'm going to do the same thing to you.'

Sam turned about and sprinted the corner, screaming the whole way. Adam didn't give chase - it wasn't necessary. There was nowhere that she could go. He smiled, highly amused, as the sounds of her screams got further and further away.

"Now that was fun," he said to himself. Suddenly a thought came to him. Maverick's not going to be happy with this.

It took Adam a moment, but he found Floyd Maverick's mind with his own. Doc, he thought. Bad news. The subjects were highly uncooperative and not at all recommended for the program. I had to eliminate them.

That's...unfortunate, Maverick's voice sounded in Adam's head. What about the girl?

We can track her down later, Adam thought. She's not exactly going anywhere.

Very well, Maverick replied. Return to the Control Dome.

As Adam turned around, the big, round, metal door began to roll back, admitting him entry to the Control Dome. He entered the Dome and didn't cast a look back as the door began to close. If he had, he would've seen the bodies on the ground illuminate with a supernatural golden light before fading. He would've seen four figures appear from thin air as Dimitri's illusion wore off.

"From now on," Dimitri smirked. "I shall be internationally known and referred to as ‘The Badman’.”
