The Legacy of Atlantis - The Awakening of Evil

Magic.

Is it real? Is it a myth? There are people all over who will argue both cases. Some people will even tell you that magic is science we are unable to comprehend. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what other people tell you. All that matters is what I tell you right now.

I come from a world thought long gone by you and your people. It's better that way. For hundreds of years, the planet of New Atlantis has prospered in peace and, well...prosperity. That all changed when I ventured into a whole new world of forces that were beyond both my control and understanding, and now chaos lurks around every corner.

Believe it or not, I'm the only one who can stop it.

My name is Jason Wolf and in order for me to succeed, I need you to believe in the impossible. Trust me when I say that the fate of both our worlds hang in the balance.

20. The Art of Ch'i

The planet of New Atlantis, the Asphodel Zone

Base 21’s Training Dome

2nd August 2017, 12:00 am…

A few hours in the Training Dome, and Jason was beginning to get the hang of the Ch’i.

It was a shame that the same couldn’t be said for Bastian or Sam, but both Ivan and Jason were finding the whole thing light work by comparison. Alex, it seemed, was quite an effective teacher, and Jason felt compelled to give 110%, especially when Alex was watching.

Right now, Alex was standing 10 yards from Ivan and Jason as they faced each other, both adopting different martial arts stances.

“Nice,” Alex was saying. “I can sense the power in here rising already. Remember – make your movements quick and explosive, but coordinate them perfectly.”

It turned out that using Ch’i not only increased Jason’s already massive power level, but also increased his focus and concentration, supercharged his every move and improved his mental efficiency, allowing him to calculate his movements with pinpoint precision.

With the same advantage, Ivan was proving a tough opponent, but Jason was having the time of his life.

“Okay,” Alex said. “Bastian, Sam, you might want to watch this.”

Bastian and Sam were still attempting to get past the initial stage of the training – Summoning the Ch’i, but Alex was hoping that watching Ivan and Jason would break their cold streak.

“Ivan, you’re on defence this time,” Alex decided. “Jason, let’s see what you’ve got. Anytime you’re ready.”

Jason realized that even his senses had been heightened. He could see Ivan’s muscles tensing, as he prepared to defend, and he positioned himself on the balls of his feet, preparing to propel himself forward. Seconds later, Jason was rocketing towards Ivan, fists raised.

Jason launched punches, kicks, elbow strikes…the lot. Ivan moved like a well-oiled machine, blocking, parrying and even dodging as they sparred back and forth across the Training Dome.

Jason quickly realized that Ivan was draining the kinetic energy from Jason’s attacks, and, instead, changed his tactic radically. He thrust both palms forward at the same time, and there was a sharp crack and a yelp.

Jason had hit Ivan with the Sharp Pain spell, so named because, obviously, it aggravated a sort burst of intense pain that coursed around the victim’s body.

Ivan shot backwards and crashed down, but was up on his feet immediately.

“Good!” Alex said. “Jason, you’re on defence!! Go!”

It was Ivan’s turn to launch himself forward. He aimed a sharp kick at Jason’s head, but the latter blocked it easily. Ivan spun in mid-air and Jason felt something smash into his shins, knocking his legs out from under him. As he dropped, Jason could sense Ivan about to unleash a final strike and his heartbeat accelerated.

Suddenly, there was a flash of green. Jason’s eyes opened, and he found himself twenty paces away from where he had been.

There was an awkward silence, before Alex broke it. “Jason…did you just-?”

“Warp?” Jason asked, examining his hands as though the answer was written on them. “Yeah, I think I did.”

“How did you-?” Bastian began.

“No idea,” Jason cut in before he could finish. “It was…automatic. Like, I just saw myself here in my mind, but then a second later, I actually was here. Is this making sense?”

Alex nodded. “I guess so. Let’s continue. And Jason? Try to keep the Warping to a minimum, okay? It’s an unfair advantage.”

Two hours later, even Sam and Bastian had managed the feat, and all four of them were running Alex’s sparring exercise. Sam against Ivan, with Bastian against Jason.

At the moment, both Sam and Bastian were the ‘attackers’. They were flying at their opponents with lightning quick punches, kicks and strikes, while Ivan and Jason were the ‘defenders’. They had to dodge, weave, bob, parry, block…do anything to avoid being hit, but not they themselves hit back.

Not yet, anyway.

“Switch!!” Alex called.

The flow of the training session reversed suddenly. Sam and Bastian began to back up, retreating into defensive positions as Ivan and Jason flipped onto the offensive and swarmed them. They’d been going at it for six hours, and thanks to the Ch’i, not one of them had even come close to burning out their energy level.

“Good!” Alex shouted as Ivan launched a spinning kick, which Sam promptly ducked. “Watch your form, Bastian!” he called out warningly as Bastian’s defence slipped and he was forced to backflip in order to dodge Jason’s roundhouse kick.

“Switch!!” the command came again.

Bastian and Sam hopped back onto the offensive and Ivan and Jason were forced to recoil backward once again.

“Switch!” the call came sooner than expected, and Sam was wrong footed. Ivan came down hard on her with a crunching tackle, but Sam propelled herself backward, out of reach, and, to her surprise, began to soar backward into the air gracefully.

“Yes!” Alex exclaimed, and even began applauding. “Excellent, Sam! Really brilliant!!”

“What the…?!” Ivan began, and then trailed off.

“She’s managed to pull off a Flying Bewitchment,” Alex explained. “A Bewitchment is a type of Magic that gives a living being, or person, an additional ability or quality. It’s the same as an Enchantment, only enchantments only work on inanimate structures.”

“We know what a Bewitchment is, Al,” Ivan said. “We just don’t know how she did it.”

Sam had her eyes closed in concentration, and gently lowered herself to the ground, before opening her eyes and grinning. “That was…weird…”

Alex smiled. “Once you’ve cast a Bewitchment on yourself for the first time, every other time you use that same Bewitchment will be much, much easier. It’s just getting past that first time that flops a lot of people.”

Alex had forgotten that Holly was watching the whole thing from the booth outside. “Maybe we should move on Alex,” Holly said thoughtfully. “Save Flying for later. Now, I think we should concentrate on using Ch’i to boost the power of your spells.”

Alex nodded. “You read my mind. Okay, guys. Now that we’ve practiced using Ch’i to supercharge physical movements, let’s move on to using Ch’i to supercharge Magical feats as well. When using Ch’i, you’ll find that your spells gain a power increase as well.”

“Excellent!” Jason smiled, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand.

“Exactly,” Alex nodded. “So…let’s take one of the most useful spells you’ll ever use as an example. The Blackout Spell. When cast incorrectly, it will only cause momentary paralysis. But when you cast it correctly, the Blackout Spell causes instantaneous unconsciousness, good for incapacitating adversaries.

“However, a powerful enough Shield can easily deflect the Blackout spell, no problem,” Alex said. “But when its power is boosted by Ch’i, stopping any such spell is not so easy. Jason, Bastian, you’re the volunteer pair. Now, I want you to take turns trying the Blackout Spell, while using Ch’i.”

Bastian and Jason both nodded. Seconds later, they faced each other from opposite ends of the dome. Alex gave each of them a glance to check that they were ready and that their energy levels were surging. “On my mark!” he said. “Begin!!”
