Right in front of me

Stephanie was betrayed by her best friend Amy and her good friend Ashton is being her shoulder to cry on. Before, her feeling towards him were purely platonic, but after spending all this time together, how long will it be before that changes?
I don't write many fanfics, but this is kind of low key - even if the tags dont seem it aha. Just a bit of fun.

3. An awkward encounter

Ash and I pack up our stuff when a chill creeps into the air. In the short car ride we sit in silence, this wouldn’t be awkward, but I think we both felt the connection at the beach. I don’t know if I want to start anything, it could ruin such a good friendship – but if I’m not attracted to him, then why do I blush when I replay him whispering into my ear? I imagine those lips gently touching mine…Ashton clears his throat and I jump.

“Steph, are you listening to me?” I was daydreaming too hard to even hear him speaking.

“Um yeah, of course” I lie, he laughs.

“Really? Then what’s your answer?” I don’t want him to think I wasn’t listening, he might get offended.

“Yes.” I hope it isn’t something important that I am answering.

“Haha you liar, you weren’t listening! I asked where you wanted to get a bite to eat.” He doesn’t look angry, another reason why I love Ash, he’s forgiving. “I hope you were enjoying your daydream.” I blush out of embarrassment, I feel like a child who has just been caught doing something naughty.

“Sorry, Ash. Can we just go to McDonald’s, I need some crappy food.”

“Then crappy food we shall eat.”

I sit in a booth alone while Ash gets our food, I check my phone and when I look up I see Amy and Jack walk in. I swear under my breath and slide down in my seat, hoping that they haven’t seen me. They sit at a table across the restaurant, but I am in their line of sight still. I scan the room for somewhere else to sit, but it’s cram-packed.

Ash slides in the booth next to me grinning, but his smile is wiped away when he sees the look on my face.

“Steph, what is it?” His voice is gentle yet protective.

“Um, nothing, I’m fine.” He looks round the room and sees them.

“Oh, do you want to leave?” He puts a hand over mine reassuringly.

“No, I can’t let them get in the way of my life.” I am determined to have a good time with Ash.

“Okay, as long as you’re sure. Here have a French fry, it’ll take your mind off them.” I take it out of his hand with my mouth and laugh. “That’s the spirit.”

We chat and eat, yet I can’t help but to keep looking over. I sneak a peek and I see them full on making out. I feel a sudden sharp pain in my chest and my eyes begin to tear up. I look over again and Amy sees me, she goes red, but turns back to Jack. I stare at my food, my appetite gone.

All of a sudden, Ash cups my chin in his fingers and lifts my face to his and presses his lips to mine. My lips give way, and I lose myself. After a few seconds he pulls away. Stunned, I look into his green eyes.

“What was that for?” I whisper, still tingling.

“They were watching you, don’t worry they aren’t any more.” I am overwhelmed with love for him, he kissed me so I could show them I am fine, that they aren’t hurting me. However, the feeling in the pit of my stomach tells me that I am slightly disappointed that it wasn’t real.

“Um, thank you. You’re the best.” I smile meekly.

“I’ve said it before and I will again, anything for you Stephanie.” The feeling in my stomach reappears, , he never calls me by my full name, and I know just how serious he is.

“Love you.” I lean my head on his shoulder. It feels so right, but I worry, what if he doesn’t feel the same way? Then this whole situation will be repeated.

“You too.” He kisses my hair and I sit up. “Eat up, or we’ll be late for band practise.”
