4. Inner-Workings of the Mind

Inner-Workings of the Mind

Will closed the book and looked at Solomon with a look that could cut steel.

"We'll discuss what that book said later, let's go to my mindscape now." Will quickly placed the book down and walked out of the room.

"What was that about?" Theo said, Solomon shrugged. They hurried after Will without looking at the book any further. As they closed the door, the light in the room shut off as if it were a refrigerator which amused Solomon.

After they caught up with Will, they now stood at the crossroads of the hallways. The light in Solomon's hallway went off, a soft hum echoed down Theo's hallway as it began to light up like when you first turn on the lights in a large room.

"Okay, where to now?" Solomon asked. Theo was already slowly stepping towards his hallway.

"Well, I imagine we need to go here since it lit up," Theo said, he continued walking forward.

Will nodded in agreement and let Theo lead the way down his hallway. It was more dimly lit, the walls were emerald green, Theo's favorite color. Carpet covered every inch of this hallway, the walls were carpet, the floor was obviously carpet and even the ceiling was carpet. The door at the end of the hallway was more ornate and old fashioned looking. It was also the only thing that wasn't completely covered in carpeting. Solomon and Will both looked at Theo confused and disturbed by the hallway.

"What? I like soft stuff." Theo said, continuing down the hallway until they reached the door.

"This door is based on the one at my house," Theo retrieved the ornate T-shaped key from his pocket and unlocked the door. He pushed it open, it squeaked loudly and sharply which made Will jump.

Solomon laughed, much to Will's embarrassment, they quickly walked in and the room lit up much quicker than the hallway had.

Will didn't recognize this room, it was very lovely and old fashioned like the door. A fireplace roared in the corner, it was surrounded by neatly placed bookcases that contained all manner of books, from novels to manga. A couch sits in front of the fireplace, it was covered in soft looking blankets and pillows. The walls were a dark green with swirls of gold here and there, the floor was wooden, the wood was unknown to Will but it looked dark.

There were a few potted plants in random places throughout the room and the smell of cinnamon wafted through the air. The song playing softly in Theo's mind was something that sounded somewhat oldish. Will recognized it as "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring, how fitting.

"The design is based on my house, Will, it's much prettier than this but this is all my mind could come up with." Theo said. "Follow me, I'll show you my secret room." Theo walked to the fireplace and pressed in one of the stones. A bookcase next to it swings away, revealing a door. Theo unlocked the door and opened it, this door did not squeak and the next room lit up.

Theo's reading room is much smaller than Solomon's, it is white like his and also dimly lit like the hallway. There is no couch only a small table where the book sits. The room is devoid of noise, like as if they stepped into a quiet hallway of an abandoned building.

"Oh, go ahead, Will, grab it," Theo said, Will grabbed the book from the table. The cover was green with silver swirls, it was lighter and thicker than Solomon's. He began to read,

"Theo's Secrets

Solomon is really great brother, I appreciate his company
I hate crayons, they smell awful
I like circus peanuts though I think I'm the only one who does
I killed someone once, it was awful
New plastic smells lovely unlike crayons"

Will closed the book and looked at Theo. He had known he had killed someone, it wasn't much of a secret.

"Theo, we were in a war, we have all killed people, it's no big deal." Will said, Theo blushed and looked away. Instantly, Will felt bad for being so blunt with it, he often forgot that Theo was somewhat emotionally weak.

The war had taken a lot out of him and he had had PTSD for a long time afterward, Dr. Adam, Theo and Will's therapist, had helped a lot. Though, he still needed medicine to get through some of the harder parts of the day.

"I'm sorry, Theo, I didn't know it really meant that much to you," Will said, ashamedly. "Just remember, we did it for a good cause. If we hadn't, none of us would be here today," he extended his arms for a hug. Theo saw and hugged him tightly, tears starting to form in his eyes. Will always thought Theo smelled nice, like lavender and grape hyacinths, you would think someone with so much hair would smell kinda... doggy.

Theo pulled away and they left the small room, back into the main area where the cinnamon smell had seemingly gotten stronger.

"Are we done her-," Theo was cut off as a knock on the door echoed hollowly throughout the room, making everyone jump in fright.
