Infatuation

I knew more about her for never having spoken to her. We didn't need to. Because the way she looked at me sometimes, that said it all. She wanted me. She didn't mind that I'd stop by her apartment late, or that I'd watch her sleep, buried under her gray blanket, while the stars strung around her room blinked on and off to the rhythm of her breathing.

22. Avery

I thought about Adam and the dead woman all the way home. When he told me he'd killed her, I didn't believe him. How could I? Granted, this was a man I didn't know too well, but I was certain he wasn't a killer.

Devon texted me on the way back to my apartment.

Did you go see him?

I parked and got out, typing: Yes. He's a mess. He thinks he killed that woman.

She answered right away: You should be careful, Avery. I know I said I was okay with this, but I still don't really trust him.

I slid my phone into my pocket and climbed the steps. Once inside, I turned on the lights and laid on the couch.

Adam was in my dream again, slowly killing me.
