Whispers of the Wolves

Two sets of four life long friends grow up in a seemingly normal life, until one day, things catch fire without a match, things move without being picked up, they can hear things miles away, and they see things that are never meant to be seen. Then one day a mysterious stranger comes telling them that they are destine to save the world that they grew up in, and the world that they belong to; one where the animals talk, mountians get up and move, and magic is everywhere. Given a quest to find the hidden Shifters, they go on a quest of a lifetime, learning more about themselves and the meaning of family as they battle dark demons, old wizards and witches gone bad, and their own mental challenges and friend ship challenges too.

21. Chapter 16 - Realizations

"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest

and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." - H.P. Lovecraft

"Up!  Everyone up!"  A voice cut through the cabin the four had slept in the night before.  Zach's head stuck through the door as he said it.  A chorus of groans came from the cabin while each one of them woke up.

"Do any of you know where Hazel is?"  The statement woke all four up in an instant.  In a second, they all saw her empty, made up bed.

"No." Replied Kara.  Her tone was worried.  Blythe wasn't any better.  Her eyes reflected great concern.  Courtney and Abby didn't seem to be concerned at all regarding the matter.  Blythe and Kara started pulling on their cloths.

"We should go look for her.  This isn't her world, and she could get hurt."  Said Abby in a bored tone.  Her concern was fake and not well given.

"She is a part of our world, Abby.  She can see through the Veil without having a Magic Aura.  Taeron may know more about her.  Do not be blinded by the hate towards an Elementary rival.  Remember, she was your friend too, once."  Miranda's words of wisdom did nothing to phase Abby's arrogant behavior.

"Fine, but I am not carrying her body back.  She isn't normal.  I can't see her shadow or see any darkness around her.  She blinds me."

"You won't need to carry a body back, Abby.  I'm right here."  A relieved sigh came from Kara and Blythe was not far behind.  Hazel went under a flurry of hugs from her friends.  When they pulled away, Hazel winced as her leg hit the ground yet again.

"Where were you?"  demanded Courtney.  Hazel met her gaze unflinchingly.

"Out looking for an herb known to reverse poison.  Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful.  The forest around here is sick.  It's been poisoned as well."  A silence followed the statement, and no one spole.

"Hazel what herb did you wish to find?"  Miranda broke the silence once more.

"I hoped to find an herb used long ago.  It was called archolo (AR - co - lo), but I think you call it Black Seed."  In an instant, Zach had advanced on Hazel.

"Black Seed is used to reverse demon poison.  A human should not know the ancient name nor the Magic name for it either.  Who. Are. You?"  He spit out.  The rage did not seem to faze Hazel on bit as she replied,

"I don't know."  The calmness in Hazel's voice seemed to calm Zach down, but not the fire that burned in his gut.

"If I knew what or who I was, I would tell you, but that is up to Taeron to figure out.  We need to get moving."

Silence lapsed, a small breakfast was divided out, and they managed not to get any complaints from Abby or Courtney.  They began walking again, and soon the hum of energy could be heard.

"We are close to the main Portal.  I suppose all of you can feel it, even you, human."  Zach spit the last few words out to Hazel.

"When we go through, stick close to me.  We will be going to Taeron immediately, so don't dawdle.  I don't know if you will be able to cross the barrier because you are human, and no human has ever crossed, so don't be disappointed when you can't follow."  A smirk lay on both Abby and Courtney's face.

"Finally, Hazel will just get out of our lives so we can find WhiteFang and get the glory of it, and become heros."  Abby said to Courtney under her breath, quietly so no one could hear.  A laugh escaped Courtney but none seemed to hear.

"We will go through two at a time, Miranda and Kara will go through first.  Then Courtney and Abby, Blythe and myself.  I will come back and try to bring you through, human."  Everyone nodded as Zach talked.  Hazel's expression gave nothing away to her emotions.  Blythe stood next to Hazel speaking quietly while Miranda took Kara through.  Kara glanced back at Hazel and received a thumbs up.  Miranda took her arm and stepped forward, vanishing from sight.  The same happen to everyone until only Hazel was left.  Zach appeared through the portal once again, though Hazel made no move to take Zach's arm or hand like the others had.  She walked straight to the mouth of the portal.  Before Zach could stop her, she disappeared.
