Continental Collide-Part I (On Hold)

The Continental Drift is a well known historical fact, where the continents all split apart. They continue to move a tiny amount every year. This year, is different. Tera is on her way to an after school event, when the continents collide. Everything around her is in ruins, But that's not the only problem. Some things that are meant to stay hidden now come to the surface.

School Out Indefinitely

"Hi! Nice to see someone else around!"

I hear the guy from across the field yell.

"Who are you?" I shout in reply.

"Name's Darien! I came from down the street at the cafe! Everywhere I've seen so far is like it is out here. All crumbled and crap. I came here to see if it was any different. Guess not."

Darien shrugs at me, and makes his way over to me, and closes the remaining distance between us.

"So, everywhere else is like this?" I ask him, a bit mystified.

"Not sure. I know the places I've seen so far are. Can't guarantee what other places look like. A sinkhole took my car!"

He exclaims, as if that's the main problem at the moment.

"Have you seen other people around. Er, well, non-dead ones?" I hesitantly ask.

"Yup, at least five others from the cafe. I graduated from this school last year, so I felt like I had a bit of an obligation to see how it was here first, rather than somewhere else." He tells me.

I look at him a bit oddly then question, "This is the first place you've looked at besides where you were?"

Darien looks pointedly at his feet and says, "Yeah, but I've passed a few places on the way here. Very few. There wasn't much left of the places, to even call them a building or something. Just rubble really."

I finally get it, mostly everything has been destroyed.

The reason why he was perky when he first saw me, was simply because I was most likely the first survivor he found in the area.

"So, am I the first one you've seen besides the others at the cafe?" I softly ask.

"Yeah. Basically. Unless you've seen others. Have you?" Darien cautiously asks.

"No, unless you count a dead girl." I reply deadpanned.

"Oh, well, depends, would you count her?" He  asks awkwardly.

"No, I suppose not..." I reply and cause an awkward silence between us.

"Well, care to join me on looking around then?"

Darien breaks the silence and perkily asks me.

Should I join him, what if he's just some pervert or a murderer or something? Can I trust him? Doesn't look like I have any other options. Or anything else needing my attention...

"Alright, I'll join you." I tell him affirmatively.

"Alright then new comrade, let's go!"

He begins to skip with giddy back toward the road and I follow suit.

"So, did you know anyone else that was in this area? I mean, that you were close to." He asks.

I think back to the reason I was at the school, my good friend, and the way I got here, my other good friend, and then my family. I think about telling him, but decide against it.

"No, not really...." I solemnly reply.

I can tell he knows I'm not saying everything, but he doesn't push the subject.

"Well, let's get back to the cafe for now then. Best to stay in a group. You know, all those apocalyptic movies where the people that get left behind get eaten, and the big pack stays strong. Let's think of that logic." Darien states.

"But what about other survivors, I thought you were looking around."

It's odd how after finding me he just gives up. Even though he was apparently looking around for other survivors....

"Well, I'd rather not risk your life or health or anything. So, we'll regroup at the cafe and then head back out. How's that?" He brightly smiles at me.

"Fine, it seems smart I suppose, let's go."

As we leave the school district on the broken cracked road, I look behind me and see all the damage.

The trees that were once beautiful and green, uprooted and torn, random sink holes scattered throughout the area, and the putrid metallic stench of blood in the air.

I break my stare from the scenery as I did before with Lisa, and turn to continue on with Darien.
