Eliza - A Fashion Design Story

Eliza want to be a fashion designer more than anything, but she's struggling to reach her goal. She practically lives by herself, as her mum works away from home a lot, so she spends most nights alone, sewing and sketching and wishing. Her friends from the boutique where she works can see her potential, but will she ever act on it and follow her dreams?

4. Just be a designer already!

It was almost closing time. Eliza was leaning on the counter, sketching as usual. Andie came up behind her.

“What you drawing?”

Andie grabbed the sheets of paper off her, gave them a once over, and then, smiling, rolled his eyes.

“Oh my god Eliza, just be a fucking designer already!”

Eliza shook her head.

“Oh, shut up Andie.”

“No, I’m serious babe! Look, you’re 17 years old. You’re young; you’ve got a whole exciting future ahead of you...”

“Oh, and this is the voice of experience talking, is it?”

Andie tutted.

“I’m mature beyond my 19 years, love.”

“Well, Ok. I’m young, I’ve got my whole life ahead of me, blah blah blah. What’s your point?”

“Shit, Eliza, you’re so...Ok. Do you love clothes?”

Eliza gestured at the clothes that surrounded them.

“And do you sketch designs all the time?”

“And...do you read fashion magazines all the time?”

“All the time.”

Eliza smiled. She was starting to see his point.

“And do you have sewing skills?”

“Some, yeah. Ok, I get what you’re saying, but...”

“And do lots of people say they could see you as a fashion designer or something?”

“Yes, Andie.”

“Well, there’s your answer, hun.”

Eliza frowned.

“Ok, so I love fashion, but who doesn’t? It’s such a competitive industry. And my mum doesn’t believe I can do it.”

“Yeah but how are you gonna know if you don’t try? And, no offence, but your mum generally doesn’t seem to believe in you. Just saying...”

Andie raised his hands and shrugged.

“You need to believe in yourself. I think you should go to college and do a fashion design course. Stop working in this shop and go and get some training so you can be what you want to be.”

Andie paused to glance at his watch.

“Ooh, it’s clocking off time. I’m not working a second more than I have to.”

He pulled a cigarette and a lighter out of his pocket and turned to leave.

“Kat, I’m going!”

He waited for an answer, but didn’t get one.

“Whatever. Bye Kat! Bye Scarlett!”

Then, he turned to Eliza.

“Babe, think about what I said. Self belief, yeah?”

And he rushed out of the shop. That was the only part of the day that he got excited - when he could go home, and get ready for a night out.
