Chapter Twenty-Five: Seeing you was the best part of my day

Ashton was drumming a beat nervously on his legs as we drove away from the hotel. I couldn't help the small smile that appeared on my lips at that. He was nervous. Poor boy. I glanced out the window watching the lights flash by. It was semi dark outside, the sun having gone down an hour ago.

"So where are we going?" I asked, my own hands fiddling in my lap. Okay, so maybe I was nervous too. But could you really blame me? It's Ashton Irwin for Christ sake! Yeah, I didn't think so.

Ashton leaned closer to me, beckoning me closer with his finger. I leaned over, my face only inches from his. I could feel his minty breath fan across my face, my cheeks flooding with color at our proximity.

"It's a secret," he breathed out, his lips pressed to my ear. Of course it was. I was about to pull away and punch his shoulder, but his lips connected to the skin beneath my ear. I caught my breath, a strange warm feeling in my belly. His lips were so soft against my heated skin and I couldn't pull away from him. He gently kissed down my neck and searing heat filled my body. It felt so good. His hands were on my hips and in my hair as his lips moved up to my jaw. My eyes fluttered closed, my hands clutching his shirt. I could feel him getting closer to my lips, excitement filling me at the thought of kissing him again.

But then the car came to a stop and someone cleared their throat. Ashton sighed heavily, pressing his forehead against mine before pulling away. My eyes flew open in shock. What just happened?

"We're here, sir," Sam called from the front, a twinkle in his eye. I blushed red as Ashton laced his fingers with mine and helped me out of the car. Bobby eyed us knowingly, a slight smirk on his otherwise expressionless face. Ashton whispered something to him that sounded something like, "Don't tell Michael," and I smiled.

Ashton's hand held mine tightly as he led me away from the limo, as if he was scared I would run away. I took the opportunity to look around us. It was mostly dark out, the sky completely black besides the stars. The moon was barely there, only the tip of a nail. There was a river beside us, the dark water flowing at a fast pace. Shops and restaurants were lit up along the street and I could hear faint music. I was curious where he was taking me as he led me away from the busy streets.

"Ashton," my voice made his steps falter, but he continued to lead me across a wooden bridge. His eyes met mine and I barely managed to look away. "Where are we going?"

"You'll see," he answered with a sweet smile, his dimples showing. Oh god, why was he so attractive? Butterflies erupted in my stomach and I blushed for no reason.

"Okay," I murmured softly, happily following him into a park. We walked past a slide, a smile lifting the corners of my mouth as memories of days in a similar park came to mind. "We met in a park."

"I know," he replied cheekily, pulling me to the swing set. I grinned as I not-so-gracefully sat in a swing, making Ashton chuckle when I almost fell off. He began to push me as I swung my legs back and forth, making me go higher and higher. I let out a giggle as I remembered the day we met. "You were dressed in that green jumper with two hearts on it, and your hair was in a tangled mess around your shoulders. Your face was flushed because Michael and Calum had been chasing you around. I remember you tripped over your own shoelaces and fell face first into the grass."

"I was twelve, Ash," I blushed lightly as I slowed my swing.

"Actually," he shook his head, rubbing the back of his neck with a small smile before gently pushing my swing. "You had just turned thirteen. I remember because you couldn't stop talking about the new camera you got for your birthday the week before."

How did he remember all those details? I couldn't even remember my age, so how had he? I let my feet drag in the sand under me, bringing myself to a full stop. I turned in my seat to stare up at the green eyed boy. He smiled up at the night sky, his body relaxed.

"I thought you were so adorable with your curly mane and vibrant blue eyes. I couldn't believe that Michael had such a beautiful sister, let alone a twin." He leaned against the pole of the swing set frame, his arms crossed over his chest as watched me fidget on the swing. I couldn't meet his searching gaze, my eyes fastened on my shoes. "I couldn't stop thinking about you. I always wanted to come over to hang out just so I could see your face. And when we started the band..."

He trailed off, his voice fading slowly as he said the words. I glanced up from the ground my eyes quickly finding Ashton's. He was blushing lightly in the dim lighting as he stared at me. I didn't want to speak, not wanting to pull us out of whatever trance we were in. I just stared at the tall boy in front of me, confused and flattered by his words.

"It was perfect," he whispered, his foot bumping against mine. Walking to my side, he picked up my hand and laced our fingers together again. "C'mon,"

He pulled me from the swing before dropping my hand. I stared at him in confusion. Where were we going now? His arm wrapped protectively around my waist as he led me away from the metal swing set.

"But I wanted to swing some more," I whined playfully, pulling away from him sightly. I instantly missed his warmth and snuggled back into his side. He chuckled at my actions, wrapping his arm around me tighter.

"We can come back later, Ashy," he murmured into my hair as he placed a sweet kiss on my temple. I could feel my cheeks heating up again and silently cursed him for being so sweet and caring. It was adorable and making those stupid butterflies flap their wings faster. "Like I was saying, being in the band was-"

"Perfect, I know. You said that already." I giggled, poking his side. He rolled his eyes, but we continued walking farther into the park. The stars were bright, setting a romantic lighting.

"It's true," he replied with a smile. "It was perfect. Seeing you was the best part of my day. I'd always come a little early just to be able to talk to you before Luke got there. And you were always following Michael everywhere, always with that camera of yours."

I blushed at those memories, remembering the time I had followed them to a party.

"The only problem was Michael," he continued as we neared a small lake. It was beautiful, the moon reflecting perfectly off of the water. "He's always been so protective. The only way I was allowed to join the band was if I swore never to like you. We were supposed to be like your brothers. The problem was: I already liked you. But I couldn't not see you. I needed to see you. So I agreed. I wouldn't try to date you."

I was silent, taking it all in. Michael was the reason I had never had a boyfriend. The reason I'd never been kissed. I love my brother, but he was too protective.

"I tried to forget about my feelings," he sighed, running a hand through his curls. I admired the way his lips moved as he talked.

Snap out of it, Ashley!

"I tried to forget about you," we had stopped walking, his hands falling to his sides in defeat. "I tried to date other girls, but I couldn't. I was too wrapped up."

"Ash," my cheeks were a permanent shade of red. His green eyes flickered down to mine and I smiled at him. "It's okay. I'm here now, so lets forget about the past."
