Chapter Sixteen: I like someone, but it isn't Louis

"If you like her you've got to make it clear. Talk to Michael and then go get your girl." As soon as the words left his lips, Calum turned and left the room.

How do I make it clear? And have I really been that obvious? I thought back over the week and grimaced. Yes, I had. But can you really blame me? Practically every time I turned around she was in his arms. Just thinking about it had me fuming. And she was with him now!

I stood up, running a hand through my hair. What did she see in him? I mean, sure he's an attractive guy I guess, but so am I. Isn't he dating someone? No, they broke up before tour. So now I had to deal with Louis as well as Luke?

"Mate, are you all right?" Michael's voice came from behind me. I turned to him, only then realizing I had been pacing. He watched me with concern as I stopped.

"Oh, uh yeah." I didn't know what to say to him. I needed to talk to him about Ashley, but how?

"Wanna talk about it?" What? Is he reading my mind now?

"Um, I-"

"It's cool man, you can tell me anything." What the actual hell? Do I tell him? "Do you like someone?"

How the...?

"Is it Lou?" What?! He thought I liked Louis?

"Shit! No! You think I'm gay?" I spluttered. I could feel my cheeks heating up and cursed my genes.

"I'm not judging, Ashton," Michael looked slightly uncomfortable talking about this. I was feeling the same way. "I'll always love you mate, you're my brother. If you--"

"It's Ashley!" I yelled, cutting him off with a horrified look. He actually thought I was gay. What made him think I liked guys?

"What?" His jaw was slack, but he somehow managed to say it.

"I like someone, but it isn't Louis." I mumbled, scratching the back of my neck. Michael looked dumbfounded. "I like Ashley."

His face went from shocked to angry in seconds. I knew this was coming.

"I told you to stay away from her, Ashton." He growled, inching closer to me. I could feel the anger radiating off of him. I really shouldn't have told him like that, but he wouldn't stop talking.

"I know, Michael, I know." I lifted my hands in surrender, backing away from him slowly. "And I've tried, really I have."

"Well try harder!" He yelled at me, his blue eyes flashing. "She's off limits, Ash! It's not negotiable!"

"Do you honestly think I would do this on purpose?" I growled at him, running both hands through my hair. "It's not like I tried to like her. I've been doing my best not to like her for four years!"

"It's not allowed, Ashton!" He shook his head in frustration. "She's my sister, I can't let you hurt her!"

"I don't want to hurt her, Michael." I groaned, letting myself drop onto the couch and putting my head in my hands. "I would never hurt her."

"You're a player, Ashton," he replied, sitting down next to me. "Once a player, always a player."

"It's not like that, Mike!" I yelled. He was starting to get on my nerves. "I've tried, really I have. I can't get her out of my head. It's been two years--two fricking years, Michael!--and I haven't been able to think about any other girl since. I'd try, I really would. But I'd get those girls home and I couldn't go through with it. I couldn't do it."

"You never did anything with them?" He asked in confusion and I shook my head. "I always thought..."

"I know, and I wanted you to." I leaned back on the couch, letting my head rest on the back. I stared at the ceiling of the bus, my eyes looking for patterns. "I know you knew about my crush on Ashley, and I wanted you to think I was over it. I didn't want to hurt you, or her. I've tried so hard to make my feelings go away."

We were silent after my confession, just sitting there. I continued to stare at the ceiling, wondering what Ashley was doing. Probably at the movies with Louis. What did he have that I didn't?

"So you really like her then." When Michael spoke, it was more of a statement than a question. I looked over at him, but he was looking down at his phone. Why was he on his phone?

"Yeah, I do."

It was weird to say that. To admit that I liked Ashley as more than a friend. She had always been off limits. I'd never been able to be more than her friend and now I was telling her brother that I liked her.

Now all I had to do was convince her.
