Chapter Eighteen: I'm Grace

I entered the small café, Niall and Calum following close behind. It's been two weeks since the boys sang "The Only Reason" for me. Two weeks of mixed messages and sleepless nights.

I couldn't figure out what Ashton's problem was, but he was getting on my nerves. Just when I thought that maybe we might be more than friends, he'd pull away, locking me out and becoming the old Ashton. The one that picked on me. It was getting exhausting--physically and emotionally.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry!" A girls voice exclaimed behind me. She seemed to be nervous and as I turned around I realized why. She had spilt her coffee all down Niall's front. His once white t-shirt now had ugly brown patches, making the shirt unwearable. It was ruined.

I looked from the girl, who was almost in tears about it, to Niall, who just looked shocked. His glances between his shirt and the girl were ones of shock, anger and then amusement. It didn't take me long to realize he had been staring at his phone (which was in his hand) when he had walked into her.

"Cal, order our drinks, yeah?" I smiled over at my amused friend who was barely containing his laughter. I shooed him away before walking over to the two teens. The brunette was small, probably only 5'2 or maybe 5'3, and her dark brown hair fell in curls to the middle of her back.

I skirted around her, hurrying to Niall's side and plucking his phone from his hand. Tucking it into my back pocket with mine, I turned my attention to the horrified girl.

"Hi, I'm Ashley," I smiled at her, offering her my hand. She was hesitant, but shook my hand, her brown eyes flickering between Niall and I.

"I'm Grace." She said with a small smile. It was a good attempt, but she still looked spooked. "I am so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going."

"It's alright, love. No harm done." Niall seemed to have found his voice. He smiled reassuringly at her, burying his hands deep in his pockets. "Let me buy you another coffee, yeah? I feel horrible you didn't get to finish yours."

"Oh no, I couldn't!" She shook her head, her small smile widening. "It wouldn't feel right. It was my fault."

"Nonsense, I walked into you, Grace." Niall's charm was turned up all the way. I could see it radiating off of him. I had to hold back a chuckle, as I made my way to the table Calum had already claimed. I heard the two bickering behind me as they followed slowly.

"So, new addition to our scouting party?" Calum asked as I sat down next to him. We both watched as Grace and Niall walked up to the counter to order her drink.

"I'm thinking yes," I nodded with a smile. Grace blushed as Niall said something and before she could react, he paid for her drink. "He seems to genuinely like her. I mean, for only knowing her for a few minutes."

"It would be good for him." Calum whispered to me as they drew closer to our table. "He needs to get over Kassidy."

I nodded in reply. It was true. Kassidy wasn't breaking up with her boyfriend anytime soon, and Niall needed to realize that and move on with his life. Grace and Niall sat down, each sipping from there own drinks.

"So Grace, this is my best friend Calum." I said, introducing them. "Cal, this is Grace."

"Hey," Calum smiled, waving a little. "We're just scouting for any good clubs and such around the area. You know of any?"

"Oh, uh, yeah," she smiled. "There's this great one just down the street called Burgundy."

"Lou will love it. He's been itching to get you out." Niall laughed at me. "He was disappointed he didn't get to take you back in Paris."

I nodded slowly. That was when I got sick. "I blame him, he picked Chinese for lunch."

Calum laughed at that, but quieted down soon after.

"Ash won't like it," he reminded me, taking a long sip from his latte.

"Screw Ashton," I grumbled, my mood souring instantly.

"Whoa, trouble in paradise?" Niall asked with a smirk.

"First off, you're one to talk," I glared at him, ignoring the warning look from Calum. "And second, Ashton hates me. There is no paradise and there never has been."

It was silent at our table for a moment, everyone looking awkwardly at each other. I felt a vibration in my back pocket and pulled the two phones out. It was Niall's. I passed it to him over the table.

"I'm sorry, Ashley," he mumbled, his fingers wrapping around his phone. "I didn't realize he was being a dick again."

"It's fine, Ni. He's just so," I paused trying to find a word to describe him. "Frustrating."

They nodded, but Grace raised her hand. "Are you dating Ashton? I just want to clarify."

"No, I'm not." I answered, shaking my head. "I don't even know if we're friends."
