15. Chapter 15

Detective Qiniso had been very dedicated when investigating Blunt. He was convicted of theft, money laundering, having sex with underage girls and tax evasion. Petal was to sell the house and hand over 30 percent of the profit to the tax man and to cover some of her father's debts. She had handed in her resignation letter because she wanted to travel for a few months and start planning the future that she wanted. It was not easy listening to her father's trial in court; he was a very disturbed man who had participated in very disturbing activities. Petal could not believe that a part of him actually made her. How was it that she had two unfit parents for most of her life but she turned out O.K? Clearly God was playing a role in her life. She still did not understand why Fana and her mother could not have turned out O.K too but she had learnt about free will - how God can take us to the water but cannot make us drink. Malik had attended some of the bible studies with her and he decided to pay his parents a visit in the weekend. Petal would come with him.

Malik did not tell his parents that he would be coming with Petal. His mother and Jasmine had spent the whole morning preparing a feast. His car came up the drive way and parked in the yard. Malik and Petal got out of the car and walked up to the front door to find his mother waiting at the door. Malik greeted her warmly. When Malik's mother saw Petal her face changed. She was at a loss for words. Petal greeted her with a warm smile and acted as though nothing was wrong. They entered the house and went to greet everyone else. Malik's parents exchanged looks but did not say anything. Lunch had many awkward silences. Jasmine and her brother were doing most of the talking but the parents were uptight.

"Alright that's it." Malik dropped his cutlery onto his plate and folded his arms on the table. "Mom, dad, I brought Petal here today because I want this to stop."

Jasmine looked around the table.

"What do you mean dear." His mother asked acting innocent and surprised

"Mom could we not pretend just because Petal is here. She deserves to be treated with honesty and dignity please do not insult her."

"Now watch how you talk to your mother now, and watch what you...." Malik's father began to talk but Malik interrupted him. "Dad I did not come here to fight. I am here to make it clear that Petal and I are a couple and I love her and we will not be separating just because you and mom do not approve of her, I approve of her!"

"Malik please calm down." Petal said. She looked at his parents and spoke to them. "I did not come here to upset anyone. Malik and I just want you to accept us the same way that you accept David and Jasmine. I love your son he is a good man. I am sorry if you think that I am not good enough, but I did not choose where I come from or the type of family that I was born into, and the challenges that I have had. I respect you and your values but Malik and I love each other and we are not asking for your permission to be together but we would love your blessing. Now please excuse me while I go and get some air." Petal got up and left the room. The table was left silent.

"I am going to smoke a cigar." Malik's father threw his serviette onto his plate and stormed off to drink some gin and smoke a cigar. There four people left at the table did not say a word. When Malik's mother could not stand the silence anymore, she got up and went to the master bedroom.

Malik was left at the table with David and his younger sister. "I like her Malik." Jasmine said. Malik looked at his sister without saying a word. "Really, I like her and personally, I think you two make a good couple. I would like to get to know her better you know, when she is not grieving and stuff."

"Baby!" David looked at her disapprovingly. "Be more sensitive." He continued. Malik just shrugged it off. "Let us clean up." He said and began to clear the dirty plates.

After cleaning up he found Petal in the garden staring at the beautiful periphery. He walked up to her and stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. "You said what you needed to say... there is nothing else you can do. We just need to let it go." He said in a low calm voice. Petal turned around to face him. "I just do not want any friction between you and your family. I lost my family and I do not want you to lose yours." There was a sadness in her eyes. "This will be sorted out in time. They will see how great you are, but for now, let's leave them alone." He kissed her gently on the lips and she kissed him back. He kissed her again, this time more passionately, tightening his grip around her waist and again she responded by kissing him back just as passionately. Upstairs by the window, Malik's mother stood watching the young couple. "Maybe we should just leave the children alone."
