“Seems like you have been watching the advert too Mr McNally.”

“Did he leave me ten pounds then?

“There was a knock on the door; Sergeant Cole got up and the tape was switched off.

He went outside then returned.

“His brief is here sir.”

Show him in would you?

“Thomas Brennan was known to the police he was tall and slim with a Terry Thomas gap between his two front teeth.

“May I have a word with my client alone please?

“You’ve got ten minutes.”

Sergeant Cole and Langley left the room but stayed outside the door.

“What the hell have you been up to this time?”

“They say I murdered my girl friend we was havin’ a row in the street and we tussled a bit she slapped me across the face and then tried to run away from me and she must of slipped on a banana skin or something and banged her head when she fell backwards.”

“Are you telling me the truth Robin?

“Yes. I swear.”

“Right leave this with me.”

“Both the officers returned and the tape recorder was switched back on. They reminded him again that he was under oath and began to question him again.

“My client is innocent of all allegations and I ask if you have no evidence that he be released on bail following this interview.

Robin went on to tell them how Brenda had come to his house demanding that they get married before the baby was due. He said that he didn’t want to marry the girl and they argued Brenda slapped him across the face and when he got annoyed and came towards her she tried to run and slipped on something on the ground. She fell backwards and banged her head.

“He then phoned the phoned the ambulance; now if he had murdered Miss Boyle why then didn’t he run?

“Why did he try to wash the bloodstains from a shirt and wash an empty brown ale bottle that also had blood on it?”

I told you someone must have put them there; I left the back door open for the cat.

“You won’t find my prints on that bottle I can tell you; because it weren’t me who put it in the bin.”

The two officers again went out of the room and a young officer stayed by the door whilst the two sergeants went to find out if the bottle had Brenda’s hair or McNally’s fingerprints on the bottle. They drew a blank on each. The blood on the bottle was not Brenda’s it was McNally’s and so was the blood on his shirt. He had wiped his mouth on the cuff of his shirt when she slapped him then drank from the bottle; the blood from his mouth had ran down the neck of the bottle onto the label.

“Can we not keep him here and get a confession out of him. “ I could beat one out of him said Bob.”

“He could do us; we have to let him go.”
