Again the whole neighbourhood came out to see what was going on and the kids were shouting it’s the copper’s dad they just got Robin McNally and they have Hoyed him in the back of a Black Maria and drove off.” Two officers stayed behind and the house was searched where upon they found that McNally was trying to wash blood from a white shirt. They also found a bloodstained brown ale bottle in the dust bin the items were bagged then brought down to the station.

Sergeant Bob Cole held McNally who now had a coat thrust over his head whilst the press clicked away. Then he was led into the station where he confirmed his name.

Then he was taken to a cell and thrown in head first. His head hit the wall and he was seeing stars for a moment then he got up and began to shout obscenities at the officers as they stood outside his cell. They left him for two hours before detective Sergeant Mike Langley and Sergeant Bob Cole entered the cell and took him to an interview room where a tape recorder was switched on.

“Right Robin you know you are under arrest and have been cautioned correct?

“You do not have to say anything but anything you do say will be given in evidence is that clear?

“Is there anything that you would like to tell us?

“Not without my solicitor I’m sayin’ nowt.”

“You are allowed one phone call so make it fast. They passed him the phone where upon he rang his sister and told her he’d been arrested.

Get me Thomas Brennan will you and sharpish. McNally gave her the number that he’d used many times before for petty crimes of burglary, he’d been to approved school and had received the birch but it didn’t deter his life of crime. He stabbed a Polish sailor in the Garrick’s Head public house where he was given a two year jail sentence in Durham jail.”

He put down the phone then sat back with a grin.

“You lot have got nothing on me and I will be out of here in less than an hour from now.

“So you think so do yee sonny boy? Well let me tell you laddie, you are going nowhere, and we can keep you here if we have a reasonable suspicion. I tell you sonny; that we have more than a reasonable suspicion.

“I’m telling you have got nowt.”

“What about the bloodstained shirt in your sink? The bloodstained bottles of brown ale in your bin as well; explain that away then?

“Not mine said McNally with a smirk on his face.

“What they doing in your house then?

The back door was open anyone could have stashed them there.”

“Why would said person or persons try to wash the shirt in Daz washing powder then?

“I don’t know, maybe they heard the advert; maybe it was the White Knight.

“It cleans so white you can see the difference.”
