Mike Langley was up early on the Monday morning he ate a quick breakfast then went to work. Once at his office he went through his law books to see if there was someway he could get a warrant to search the premises of the Oakridge Children’s home. He would have to apply to the court again then give explanations to why he was investigating the property. This was all going to take time he thought as he asked for them to send him a warrant.

He came home that evening feeling frustrated.

“How did you get on asked Maureen?

“I got nowhere as usual; I’ve got to wait and this could take up to a week even two.

The next few days Mike just went about his usual work until the Friday when he received a call from the County Courts office asking why he wanted a warrant to search the premises.

“It is my belief that there is abuse of children going on in the home.”

“Some of these children can be really difficult to control and they have to be disciplined Mr Langley.”

“There is a fine line between discipline and abuse.”

“Alright Mr Langley; The County Court will issue the warrant.”

“It will be on your desk on Monday.”

Mike came home again to tell his wife the news; he was not happy.

“Is there no way you could collect the letter Mike?”

“No Maureen we have got to abide by the rules; we cannot go barging in there.”

“There is nothing stopping us from going up there though and observing from outside.

“Good we shall drive up there tomorrow.

Mike took his wife out for a meal then they went to the playhouse to watch a production of the Pirates of Penzance.

They were both ready by nine o’clock the next morning both had a pair of binoculars with them when they went to the countryside to do some bird watching which was a hobby they both enjoyed.

“We cannot get too close Maureen; if we are spotted we could be arrested ourselves for snooping.”

It took them over an hour before the car pulled in further up from the main gates.

From the outside everything appeared normal; children were exercising in the yard. There was a group clearing the leaves from the lawns whilst others were either planting bulbs or planting seeds.

“This is going to be a lot harder than we thought Maureen; they have this off to a fine art; just like the Germans did during World War Two, when musicians played as the trains carried thousands of Jews that were eventually led to slaughter in the gas chambers of the concentration camps.

“We will go have some dinner in town and come back when it is dark.”

Mike found an Italian restaurant where they ate lasagne and drank a bottle of wine.”

Then they walked along the road until they saw the back of the home there were no house’s it was in a lane but there was a six feet high wall around the place
