“Was the child Robin McNally’s?

“Yes, she had tried to hide it from her parents because they are both staunch Catholics. It is a mortal sin in the eyes of the church not being married and that.”

“Did the baby survive?

“Yes she had a son.”

“Excuse me a moment would you asked Alan as he radioed the station. “Could you send a Black Maria to pick up Mr Robin McNally at seventy seven Pear Tree over?”

“I will be on my way in few minutes Charlie over and out.”

“Is this McNally a violent man then Anne?

“Yes; he is when he’s been on the Broon Ale.”

“Has he been violent to her in the past?

“Yes; he gave her a black eye and had to tell her mother she had fallen in the kipper house on some fish guts.”

“Thank you Mrs Clay; we will need you to come down to the station and make a statement.”

“Thank you Constable.”

The police officer got into the car and drove away at speed down Oakwood Avenue

Then turned right.

“What’s gannin’ on then Anne?

“It’s Brenda Boyle She’s been murdered.

“Betty White shouted so the rest could all hear. Brenda Boyles been murdered!

The women all came to Anne’s gate

Where she told them all about what the police office had said.”

“I always thought that Robin McNally was a wrongun’ said Nancy Taws.”

“Well his heed is gannin’ to be swingin’ on the end of a rope for this; you mark my words said Anne as she turned and went back into the house.

The Black Maria pulled silently into the street as Alan Thomson got of his car to join them. Police Sergeant Bob Cole directed two of his men to cover the back of the house then the officers banged on the door.

“Police they shouted; Open up.”

There was no answer until Bob Cole heard a struggle around the back of the house. Bob was a big man at six feet three and two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle.

He was from Scotland originally and tossed the caber and the hammer but was very light on his feet and ran around as one of his officers was struggling with McNally whilst the other who had been punched to the ground was getting to his feet.

Bob Cole took hold of Robin McNally as if he were a piece of match wood then bounced him off the wall of the house before wrestling him to the ground.

“Get off me you bastard he screamed as Alan Thompson handcuffed him whilst Bob used his weight to keep him pinned to the ground.

“Robin McNally you are under arrest for the murder of Brenda Boyle; “You do not have to say anything but anything you do say will be taken down as evidence.”
