When Mike returned with the tea Jackie had taken the pie out of the hold all

He took the three layers of foil off the plate then cut the pie with an expert hand with the knife he had brought then placed a piece onto the foil then handed it to Mike Langley.

“Thank you Jackie; “I hope it tastes as good as it looks.”

Mike bit into the pie expecting to say thanks but I’m not really that hungry but the pie tasted just like his grandmother used to make, in fact it was better.”

“Where did you learn to cook like that?

“My mother showed me how to cook; I can bake bread, cakes, soups, and stews.

“I can make most of the puddings we get at school but only better.”

“Do you know that is astonishing for a five year old to be able to remember all the ingredients needed?”

“I find it quite easy.”

“I think you could teach my wife a thing or two in the kitchen.”

“Would you like to come and stay at my house until we get you sorted out?

“Yes I would.”

“Alright then when we have eaten another piece of your wonderful pie I will drive you to my house.”

“Jackie smiled.”

“How did my father die; no one told me?

“Your father was killed rescuing men that were trapped under ground; he went down three times before there was a cave in. Your father was buried under tons of coal.”

“Your father was a hero Jackie; all the men who have ever worked down a pit will remember your father and they will speak of him a hundred years from now.

“Thank you for telling me.”

“Do you have any children Mr Langley?

“Yes; I have a daughter who is now married.”

“I always wanted a sister or a brother.”

“Maybe one day you will have sons and daughters of your own.”

“Are you ready then?

 “Yes sir.”

Would you mind if we took the rest of that pie home; I would like my wife to try some?

“Not at all sir.”

Mike Wrapped up the plate with the foil then placed it in his bag. He carried the black hold all out for the boy then directed him to his car.

Come on you can sit up front with me but don’t tell anyone.”

“I know it’s against the law.”

“But I am the law tonight so you are alright.”

“Where do you live?

“I live on Preston Grange near Malvern Road.”

“My father worked a Preston pit before they closed it down.”

“Is that so; my father worked there too and he swore that none of his children would ever go down the pit.”
