The time ticked away as Robin sat in the Dolphin waiting for Johnny to show up.

Then at twenty past six Johnny walked in carrying a large holdall. Robin went to the bar to get more drinks; when he returned he asked if his plan had worked.

“Yes even the captain said it was genius to tie the bag underneath the boat until the boat was out at sea then retrieve it then do the same with the money when customs came to check on board. The bag hummed a bit when we passed the stones off. We packed them in a fish box then delivered it by car to him personally. He was delighted to get four stone of fresh cod as well as the stones.

“How much did we get?

“We got fifty thousand pounds.”

“You little beauty Johnny.

“I will see you right mate, don’t worry.”

“I hope so I’ve been puking up all the way there and back on board that ship.”

“You are going to be set up for life you know that?

“Well with five grand in your pocket you are going to be well off too matey.

“You can buy a house for eight hundred and sixty quid a new car for about a hundred

“You can rest easy.”

“If I were you I would invest the lot into property and charge whoever lives there rent that way you have a steady income every week guaranteed and tax free. Then if you want after a few years sell them and move to Spain and live like a king on the profit.”

“Good idea.”

“I’ll order us a taxi and get out of here I’m leaving for another guest house in Whitley Bay. Bob Cole was in the Stuffed Dog this morning; I met a bird there last night and went back to her house. Some one must have informed the coppers about me.

“We have to keep three moves ahead of that slimy bastard Johnny.”

“Yes that’s why I’m leaving tonight.”

“I am going to Ireland for a month or two until the heat is off.

I’ve arranged passage on another fishing boat. “I sail tonight at twelve”

The taxi arrived and the two men got in.”

“Take us to park road in Whitley Bay.”

Bob Cole still hadn’t got a lead until he spoke to landlord who informed him of the girls who were regulars in his bar.

That night he sat in the corner of the Stuffed Dog and waited.

It was eight thirty when Debbie Ellison and her friend Janet Stonebanks walked in. They went to the bar and got themselves a shandy then sat near the jukebox.

The landlord gave Bob the nod and he got up and walked over casually.

“Hello girls may I join you for a minute.”

“Bugger off granddad.”

Bob took out his badge and showed it to the girls then sat at the table.

“We are sorry officer we thought you was some letch.

“It’s alright and it’s Sergeant Cole.

Now I need to ask you who you were with last night.”
