Elizabeth put her finger to her mouth then thought for a second then said, I know Jackie its chips.”

Good; now try and think how the word sounds then write it down.

She wrote a C- H-I-P-Z, there is that right?

“Almost Elizabeth but instead of a Z put an S that spells C-H-I-P-S.

“How did you get so clever Jackie?”

“My dad taught me.

“Now, I want you to write my name think of the sound.

“J-A-C-Y;

“Nearly it’s spelt like this J-A-C –K-I-E now you copy that.

Mrs Backhouse came into the classroom and asked Elizabeth what she was doing.

“Jackie is teaching me how to write and spell words Mrs Backhouse.

“He’s so clever.”

“Yes he is isn’t he; can I have a look at what you have written then Elizabeth?

Elizabeth showed Mrs Backhouse what she had done.”

Very good Elizabeth how did Jackie teach you to do that?

He made me think what the word sounded like then I wrote down the letters.

“Could you read the words on the shopping list?

“Not at first until Jackie showed me how to break the word up then put the two words together to make one word.”

“That is very good Elizabeth.”

“The bell sounded and Elizabeth got up from the floor and asked Jackie if he would teach her some more words tomorrow.

“Yes; I will help you Elizabeth.”

“Bye then; I have got to go now.”

Jackie walked out of the classroom and was walking towards the hall.

You did a very good thing there Jackie; would you like to show some other children how to read and write tomorrow.

“Yes if you like?

“No it has got to be your decision Jackie; you have to do things because you enjoy doing them not because you are told to do them.”

“I enjoyed teaching Elizabeth.” “Its good when you see someone learning things.”

“Yes it is isn’t it; that’s why I became a teacher Jackie.

“Today you reached into a child’s mind and made them think that learning can be fun.”

“You could do so much more not only with Elizabeth but with children older than her.”

“Your knowledge is far more advanced than even mine.”

“Why because no one taught you how to use phonic sounds to help Elizabeth to read and write.

“Not even your father showed you, did he?

“He taught me to copy words and told me what they were.”
