“When the dance was over they went back to their seats.

“What about you then Debbie where do you work.

“I work for Dukes and Mark’s up on the coast road they make clothes”

“Sup up love I’m going to the bar;

“You wouldn’t be trying to get me drunk now would you?

“Me; no never.”

Robin went back to the bar and asked the barman to stick a treble in the orange this time. When he returned Robin sat next to her and put his arms around her.

“So do you live at home then?

“No, I have a flat on Clive Street; me and my work friend that you saw in the Salutation live there.”

“You can come back to mine tonight if you like.”

“I think I might, but I have to leave early in the morning; you know what the Navy are like they don’t wait in port very long.”

“Debbie had drunk her vodka and was now feeling quite merry; do you want another then?

“No; I think you should just take me home; we don’t have a lot of time, do we she giggled?

“Long enough he said as he kissed her.”

“Give me a second I’m just going to freshen up and we can leave.”

“I’ll see you up stairs I will get us a taxi.

“Robin went into the cloak room where he had a word with the man there and asked him where he could get some protection. The man passed him a packet and Robin gave him a pound note then winked.

He put the packet into his jacket then went to relieve himself.”

When he came out he washed his hands then took out his comb and restyled his Brylcreemed hair which was combed back in the style of Don Everley the singer from the Everley brothers.

Debbie waited near the reception as Robin ordered a taxi.

“You alright then pet?

“Yes, it’s that drink I’m just not used to it.”

“You will be fine; I will open the window in the taxi so you can get some fresh air.”

The coast taxi arrived and they got in.

“Just winding the window a little driver my girl friend is feeling a little light headed.

“It will cost you two pounds if she’s sick in my cab said the driver.”

“Where are you going anyway?

“Clive Street.”

“Robin didn’t like this man’s attitude and give him a contemptuous look as he stared out of his mirror. To make matters worse he tried to rip him off thinking he was an Australian tourist.

“That will be five bob matey said the driver as he pulled up into the street.”

“Here’s two bob and you’re getting no tip either you robbing swine.”

“The driver took the money then drove off with his tyres screeching.
