The sound of the live music could be heard from down stairs in the ballroom as Robin escorted Debbie down the stairs after buying two tickets. People were already up dancing as Debbie looked around. On stage was “Ritchie and the Rocketts” were covering the Guy Mitchell song “She Wears Red Feathers” as Robin found them a seat; Debbie sat down whilst Robin went to the bar, Vodka and Orange and a pint for me. He gave the bartender ten bob then stood at the bar looking around.

He caught sight of two lads who saw Debbie and came over to ask her to dance. She must have told them she was with someone because they moved on.

He walked over with the drinks. He took a sip from his pint because it was full to the top then handed over the vodka and orange to Debbie.

“What’s this then Robin this isn’t Shandy.”

“No, it’s a real woman’s drink.”

“She tasted it; then said it’s nice what’s in it?

“Eye of newt, foot of toad.”

“She nudged him playfully.”

“Do you want to dance then?

“Go on then.”

Ritchie did a cover of Al Martino’s “Here in My Heart” Robin held Debbie close as they danced.

“Do you like it here then?

“I’ve never been to a place like this before.”

“Yes, this is the place for classy women.”

“So you bring all your Girls here?

“Only the one’s I like.”

“So you like me then.”

“Oh Aye.”

“You have a funny accent are you foreign?

“I’ve been to sea; you know in the Merchant Navy.”

“ I like a man in uniform; were you a Captain?

“Second in command, he lied.” Yes we sailed all over the world; Gibraltar, Malta and Australia.”

“Lovely; I’ve never been abroad before.”

“Well stick with me Debbie and I might take you.”

“Debbie rested her head on Robin’s broad shoulders.”

“So do you live local then Robin?

“I’m staying with my aunt whilst I wait for another ship to come in.

“It must be dead exciting going around the world in uniform.

“Yes; it has its perks, people respect the Royal Navy Merchant Ships; “best in the World we are.”

“Do you make a lot of money?”

“Yes about fifteen grand a year.”

“Lying seemed to come easy to Robin who could certainly sell a story.”
