The third day after the robbery Freddie Crass walked into four pubs during the day and night. The Blackie Boy was a well know haunt for thieves and felons he sat with a beer in the corner making on to be reading the news paper as he listened to all the conversations that were taking place.

Pretending to write out a betting slip, Freddie Crass recorded snippets of conversation that Bob Cole would find useful in his search for the jewellery heist robbers.

One name kept on popping up in the conversation an that was Robin or was it The Robin.

He went to the Black Bull and then the Hydraulic then finally the Tap and Spile.

Freddie got on the phone and rang the number Bob Cole had given him that would put him through to Bob’s office.

“Hello Bob Cole.”

“It’s me Feddie; I’ve got you a name.”

Go on then who is it?

“The man you want is called Robin.

“Aye Robin bastard said the Scotsman sarcastically.”

“That’s the name that’s been put about in the bars I visited.”

“Have you heard anything about the moving of merchandise?

“No; but I will keep my ears to the ground.”

“Good keep me posted.”

The phone went dead as Bob hung up. He was racking his brain to put a face to the name Robin. He looked through countless mug shots until he saw Robin McNally’s picture.

Couldn’t be, he thought he’s just a petty thief and someone who got away with murder?

He left the country and went to Australia.

Bob picked up the phone again and dialled the Australian immigration authorities where he spoke to a Mick Sanderson.

After some checking was done it was confirmed that he had been deported some eight months ago and placed on the Southern Ventura to work his passage for stealing a gold necklace in a jewellers.”

“What did you say?

“Yes he asked the girl if he could try on a large heavy gold chain with a crucifix attached to it, then ran off with it. We caught the bugger trying to flog it in one of the bars some time later.”

“Where was the ship due to dock?

“Smiths repair yard in North Shields.

“Thanks Mick said Bob; you have been a great help then hung up.”

“Now I’m going to have you McNally Bob uttered under his breath.

Bob went out to the desk and ran copies of McNally’s photo and passed them around to all his men. “Now if you see this man do not; I repeat do not apprehend him just follow and report back to me understood?

“Yes sir they voiced.

“Right; I want squad car out front now Charlie.”

 “Where are we going?

“Fishing; we are going fishing Charlie.”
