Emily Backhouse took hold of Jackie’s hand and led him to her car.

Where are we going Mrs Backhouse?

“Well first we are going to get you some dinner, and then you are going to meet a special friend of mine.

“It’s because he is very interested in clever boys like you.”

“Can I read some more of this book; it’s really good.”

“I reckon you may; but he wants’ you to do some little sums that I gave you this morning.

“Oh those alright then.”

“It was eleven fifty five when Emily walked into the university she knew her way around and went straight to the cafeteria where they were serving lunch. Jackie could smell all the food and his tummy began to rumble.

“Now Jackie pick up a tray and a knife, fork, and spoon you can have anything you like and a pudding too.”

“Thank you Mrs Backhouse.”

The lady behind the counter asked Jackie what he wanted and he asked for sausage, egg, and chips. “Can I get two eggs Mrs Backhouse?

“Would you give the boy two eggs please asked Emily?

Jackie chose some trifle for his pudding then waited until Mrs Backhouse had got her meal. Which was a ham and egg salad; she had gotten some trifle the same as Jackie for pudding.

“You like trifle too said Jackie with a smile as Emily took her seat.

Jackie got straight into his dinner as Emily sprinkled some salt and pepper onto the boiled egg.

“Is that nice Jackie?

“Yes Mrs Backhouse it is lovely.

The young headmistress smiled at Jackie; then told him he was a special little lad.

Emily was used to the rough and ready kids who attended her school not well mannered and refined boy like Jackie.

When Jackie had finished his meal; he asked if he could get a drink of water.

“Yes go ask at the counter.”

Emily was surprised when he came back with two glasses and gave her one.

Most boys his age would have just got a drink for themselves.

By quarter past twelve John Milton joined them.

“Hello Emily sorry I got held up.”

“So this is the clever lad that you were on about?

“Yes; this is Jackie Kevin Boyle

John held out his hand and said “hello Jackie I’m pleased to meet you.”

“You too Mr Milton; have you read Swallows and Amazons it’s a fantastic story.

“Do you know who the author is?

“Yes of course, you do not read a book without knowing who wrote the story

Do you? It was written by Arthur Ransome who actually based the story on Robinson Crusoe.
