Jackie began to read the story; he was as fluent as any adult and Mrs Backhouse stopped him after he had read several pages.

“Very good Jackie now can you write me a little story of your own.

“Yes said Jackie and took the exercise book and began to write. He wrote of an adventure down on the fish quay sands where a ship had been marooned where pirates and smugglers plundered the ship and hid the loot in the cave of priory castle.

“When Mrs Backhouse read the story she was amazed at Jackie’s writing. It was so neat the spelling and punctuation were that of a man not of a boy of just four years old.

“Who taught you this Jackie?

“Well my father; but he isn’t really my father he’s my grand father because my mother was murdered and my grand mother who I called mam brought me up.”

“Your grand parents have done a splendid job. Now if I set you some sums could you do them for me?

Mrs Backhouse wrote out some add, take away, and multiply sums. She then handed them over to the boy.”

“Easy said Jackie as he finished them all in less than two minutes.

“They were all correct.”

“Do you know where Brazil is Jackie?

“Yes it’s in South America; walking over to the map that was on the wall he pointed it out.

Jackie I am going to make a phone call; can you wait outside?

Yes Mrs Backhouse; can I take the book I like the story.”

“Yes by all means.”

“Jackie went outside and closed the door.”

Mrs Backhouse got on the phone and rang John Milton.”

“Hello John; its Emily Backhouse from Meadowell Infant School here, I have a child here call Jackie Kevin Boyle who I would like you to meet. He’s four years old and has the mind of man.

He can read and write like an adult and I just set him mathematical sums that a thirteen year old would struggle with he completed them in less than two minutes and they were all correct. He is outside reading Swallows an Amazons.

“Seems like we have a child genius in our midst Emily.”

“There is only one other case of this sort of thing that I have heard of and it was a boy from Philadelphia in America.

“They are known as savants.”

“Yes I have heard of that too; I read it in a journal many years ago I think they called the boy Timothy Edwards.

“You have a better memory than I Emily.

“What are we to do with the boy John?

“I think we need to have him tested at the university can you bring him with you? “ “Maybe we could have lunch and I will bring some tests just to see what level he is at.”

“See you at the university at twelve.
