The ambulance came with the bell ringing as it sped up West Percy Road it roared past the Ridges Inn then turned up to Marina Avenue in North Shields there was a crowd of people gathered around looking down on the woman lying on the ground unconscious as it came to a halt.

The two ambulance men got out and asked if any one knew the woman.

“It’s Brenda Boyle from Briarwood Avenue.

“Can someone inform her parents that we are taking her directly to Preston hospital please?

“I’ll gan an tell hor ma’ said a young girl.

“Thank you said the ambulance man as he went into the back of the Bedford ambulance and pulled out a stretcher then gently lifted the woman onto it then covered her with a blanket. Then doors were quickly closed and the ambulance driver got in whilst the other administered oxygen to the patient in the back.

The driver started the ambulance and turned on the bell again then picked up the receiver from the dashboard.

“Hello this is Alpha 1 to base over.”

“Go ahead Alpha 1 over.”

“We have a patient on route; she was found on unconscious in the street is breathing but has not come around yet.

“We are giving her oxygen. E.T.A in four minutes.

“Okay Alpha 1 we will be standing by over.”

“Roger that, over and out.”

Charlie Dixon pulled back the window to the driver’s cabin as he explained that the woman had a laceration to the back of her head. He had placed some gauze behind her head to stop the bleeding.

“Do you think she did it when she fell?

“Highly unlikely, it looks like she has been hit with a bottle or a blunt instrument.”

The ambulance turned onto Queen Alexander Road then entered the hospital on the left.

They backed into the main entrance where to porters were waiting.

“Charley explained where he had found the woman and gave them her name and the street where she lived.

“Has anyone informed her parents Charlie?

“Yes said Ronnie Heron a young girl went to tell them.”

“She has a laceration to the back of her head that looks consistent with a blunt instrument Dick.”

“Right thanks lads let’s get her into Observation and get Doctor Collins to look at her.

The porters wheeled the trolley that Brenda had been put on and took her to the emergency room.

Doctor Collins checked her eyes to see if they were fixed and dilated. Then he sounded her chest. Her breathing was shallow but she was alive.
