Don't Forget

This is about 17 year old Eternity Rain Armer. She's recovering from a bad accident with help from Dr. Pethers, Nurse Dawn, and her small family. She slowly starts to remember things. One day she remembers what happened. Once she gets out of the hospital she goes on a search for the person she lost.

7. Later

I don’t know how long I lay there staring up at the ceiling thinking about everything I know. After a while longer Nurse Dawn brings in my meds. I had forgotten about them.

“Here’s your meds.” Nurse Dawn says.

“Oh great. I’m excited.” I say in a fake cheerful voice.

“I bet.” She laughs.

I toss the meds in my mouth and wash them down with just enough water.

“Show me your mouth.” She instructs.

I open my mouth and stick out my tongue, wiggling it around.

“Oh my what a big tongue you have.” Nurse Dawn imitates the voice of Little Red Riding Hood.

I smile and laugh.

“I have to go now. I’ll be back at lunch.” She turns to go out the door.

“Hey!” I stop her.

“Yes?” She turns around.

“I’m just wondering but do you always work?.”

“Oh I work all day long for 2 days then 8 hours another day.” She replies.

“Cool.” I say.

“Well, I’m going to go.” Nurse Dawn says and then she’s gone before I can say another word.

I sigh. There’s nothing I can really do. I sit there for a couple minutes looking around the room, then my eyes land on the Bible. I smile.

I immerse myself into the book of Genesis where I left off. Once I’m done with that book I start on the book of Exodus. I run into the Ten Commandments. I sit there and write them down on the back of my drawing of the rose. I have broken all of the Ten Commandments so many times that it isn’t funny. I wonder if my family is into this religion. I learn more and more as I read. I also somewhat learn how to become what you would call a Christian.

After a while I decide it’s a time for a break. I set down my book, open on my spot. I sigh, bored and lonely.

I look up at the clock. I’ve been reading for 2 and half hours.  It was about 9:00 when Taylor left me on my own. Now it’s 12:37.

Nurse Dawn should have already brought my lunch 37 minutes ago. I wonder where she is.

The door swings open, and in comes Nurse Dawn.

“Oh I am so sorry, Eternity. I had a patient have a break down when I brought in his food and meds. I swear he should be in a mental hospital,” Then she sighs, “Thank goodness you have no medicine. I’m so late. I would love to stay and chat but I have to go.”

She sets the tray down on my nightstand and rushes out the door. I look over at my food. It’s a salad.

I sigh. A salad. Really? Can’t they feed teenagers anything else? Ha. No way I’m going to eat that. And they wonder why that guy had a breakdown. I’m kidding, definitely kidding.

I wonder when they come and get the trays. I’ve never seen them come and get the trays. I’m normally asleep and that’s probably why.

I hear the door open up and it knocks me out of my trance. I look up and see Dr. Pethers walk in.

“Hey, Eternity.” He greets me.

“Hey, Dr. Pethers.” I greet back.

“It’s supposed to be my lunch break but I decided to come back and visit you.” He tells me.

“Is it because I’m your worst case?” I jeered.

“No. Not exactly. I just thought I would come visit you. I heard you didn’t get too much attention yesterday. I talked to your parents about that. You definitely need more attention since you are recovering from amnesia.” He explains.

I sit there and look at him. I know he’s lying because I’ve had enough attention today. Also, today is not yesterday.

“Okay. Why are you really here?” I ask.

“I told-” He starts.

“No, the truth.” I sigh.

“Okay. I’m here because I want to know if you remember what happened. I overheard your brother on the phone as he walked out. He was saying something about how you remember what happened and he knew what your friend said wasn’t correct.”

“Ugh.” I moan. I wonder whom Taylor told.

“Yeah.” Dr. Pethers added.

“Yeah.” I mimicked.

“The longer I’ve known you the more smart alecky you get.” He observes.

“Yes.” I smile.

“Would you please tell me what happened?” He asks.

“Fine.” Then I explain exactly what I explained to Taylor.

After what I done he stared at me for a moment, “Did you ever see him again?”

“No.” I lie.

“For some reason, I don’t believe you.” He says.

“Why would you suspect that?” I ask.

“Because I know what really happened.”

I just stare at him. I don’t answer.

“Anything?” He asks.

I sigh, “Yes.”

“Okay what happened?”

“He came and said goodbye.” I say honestly.

“Yeah?” He says.

“Yeah. So I have a question.” I confront him.

“Yes?” He quavered.

“Did you help David get away?” I ask.

Dr. Pethers just stares at me like I stared at him. We all have our secrets that get out, now don’t we?

Finally he answers with a sigh, “Yes. Yes I did.”

“Why and how?” I look at him with my disappointed look.

“Why? Well he was going to go into a bad situation once he got out. His family was going to send him away and I couldn’t stand it nor could he. We talked about it and figured it out. I got him a ride and sent him on his way. And how? I got a dead body from the morgue that looked like him. I fixed it all up and said it was him. Everyone bought it.” Dr. Pethers explains.

“Wow.” I muse.

“Yeah. I was pretty surprised with it myself.” He says.

“Mhm.” I don’t know what else to say.

“Well, I’m going to go finish my lunch real quick.”

I look at the clock. We’ve been talking for an hour. “You have a long lunch break I say.”

“Yeah. It’s not this long. I took some extra time, which means I’ll be staying an hour later tonight.” He says and then he’s out the door.

I look over at my tray. I’m hungry but I’m not eating that stuff.

I hear the door open again expecting Dr. Pethers to walk in but instead a man dressed in a black shirt and jeans does. He looks about 19 or 20. He stops when he sees me.

“Normally you’re  asleep around this time.” His deep voice booms. His blue eyes shine bright, burning into me plucking a string in my heart. I don’t know why though.

“Uh,” I stare at him. I feel like I know him but I don’t know where to place him, “Yeah. I normally am.”

“Don’t you remember me, Eternity?” He asks.

“Honestly no.” I say.

“It’s okay. I know what happened and all.” He starts walking towards me.

I sit there for a moment not saying anything. Once he gets to me, he grabs the tray.

“I’m Allen. I’m David’s older brother. Just in case you were wondering.”

“Reagan?” I ask.

He nods his head, “Yeah. Reagan.”

“Oh. It was nice meeting you Reagan. Or, well, seeing you.” I say.

“Hey maybe I’ll come by some time and we can chat.” He suggests.

“Yeah. That sounds good.” I mumble.

“I’ll see you around.” Then Reagan walks out with my tray, not a thing eaten off of it.

I stare at the door long after he’s gone. David’s brother. No wonder he looked so familiar. He looks just like David. Maybe it was that I knew him too.

I lay back into my bed. It’s been a busy day. I look over at the clock and it’s 1:49 PM.

I decided to take a nap.

I wake up slowly but surely. Finally I’m sitting up in my bed after a couple minutes. I look up at the clock and it’s 4:30 PM. Man I was asleep a long time.

I dreamt of David over and over. In fact it was the same thing. It was the last time I saw him but each time it was a little different.

I sit and think of it for a while. I think seeing Keagan yesterday triggered it. Or was his name Reagan? I don’t remember. I’ll ask him the next time I see him.

I sit a while longer and a nurse comes in and brings me in my meds and foods. It's the same routine but not the same without Nurse Dawn. I eat my food then go to sleep for the night.
