1. Day 1

I wake and see a group of people surrounding me. I’m not sure what is going on. I don’t recognize anyone nor do I know where I am.

Two people push through the group with worried looks on their faces.

“Eternity.” The woman says as she starts to cry. She has black hair and brown eyes. The man leans over and hugs me but I push him back, freaked out and overwhelmed. He gives me a confused look, his big blue eyes wide and his dirty blonde hair ruffled.

“Eternity,” He says, “Do you know who I am?”

“No,” I whisperer, “I don’t remember anything.”

The woman starts to cry, “I’m your mother and this is your father.” She gestures to the man.

“I’m going to get the doctor.” My father says.

When the doctor comes in he makes everyone leave, including my parents. The first thing he does is he tells me his name, Dr. Pethers. Then, Dr. Pethers asks me a bunch of questions, which I have no answers to. He shines a light into my eyes, checks my pulse, my blood pressure and so on. He tells me each thing he’s doing before he does it and makes sure I understand what’s going on. Finally he tells me that I can relax and take a nap if I want to. The second Dr. Pethers walks out of the room, I shut my eyes I was exhausted. Within seconds, I’m asleep.

“Siiiiiisssssyyyyyy!!!” The yelling of a little girl pulls me out of my sleep.

“Be quiet, Maddie. Sissy is sleeping.” I hear a women say. I open my eyes and look around. There’s a little girl standing at the foot of my bed. She looks no older than 3. She has dark black hair and bright blue eyes. She looks almost exactly like the woman, my mother.

“No she isn’t, Mommy. Look, her eyes are open.” Said Maddie.

“Oh, Eternity, I’m sorry if we woke you up. Maddie wanted to see you so I brought her by.” My mother says. Seeing my confused look, she adds, “Maddie is your little sister.”

I smile at the thought of having a little sister, “Hi, Maddie.”

She smiles back and crawls up onto my hospital bed. “How are you, Sissy?”

“I’m good. How are you?” I reply. I already adore her.

“Good as honey.” Maddie answers with a lopsided smile.

I smile and laugh then I look over at my mom wondering what to say. She just looks back with a concerned look.

“Do I have any more siblings?” I ask.

“Yeah. You have an older brother named Taylor. He’s on his way though. He’s 19 and goes to college in New York City at Julliard.” My mom replies with a sad look on her face.

I go to answer, but Maddie interrupts. “Taylor coming!”

“Yes, baby. Taylor is coming.” Mom replies.

“Yay!” Maddie starts to jump up on my bed but then hits my leg.

I scream in pain. I yank back the covers and my leg is in a cast. I start to bawl because it hurts so badly. I didn’t even know I had a cast

Maddie starts to cry and scream, knowing she hurt me. Repeatedly, she says “Sorry, Sissy, sorry. Stop crying. I say sorry!”

But I can’t. It hurts to bad. My mom takes Maddie off the bed as doctors and nurses come running in. They push Mom and Maddie out. I beg them to make it stop hurting. They cut off the cast and look to see what’s wrong. One of the nurses tells me that the cast was too loose and the bone re-broke.

Another nurse sticks a needle in my arm. A cold clear liquid seeps into my blood vein. Within a minute, I’m out.

I wake up off and on. I see a flash of lights here, a person there; I hear the beeping of my monitor, a man and woman arguing, a cry of a young boy, the screams of a little girl. Then it all stops and I wake up completely.

A blonde boy with bright blue eyes and flippy hair is sitting by my bed but he’s asleep. No one else is in the room. I try to sit up but I get woozy instantly so I lay back down.

I lay there for a long time watching him before he wakes up. He looks over and notices I’m watching him. “Hey Eternity. I’m Taylor, your older brother.”

“You’re the one that goes to that college. Julliard or something?” I ask.

“Julliard. Yeah I go there.” He sighs, still tired.

“That’s cool. What’s it like?” I venture.

“It’s a music school. It’s really hard to get into, but it’s so much fun. You want to go there too.” He says.

“Music, huh?” I ask, “What do I do in music?”

“You play the piano, guitar, and the saxophone. You also sing. You’re really talented at all of it.” Taylor’s eyes light up. You could tell he was proud of me.

“I do?” I mused.

“Yeah.” He said in between another yawn.

“You’re really tired.” I observe.

“I had been up for almost 48 hours. I’ve only been asleep um…” He looks up at the clock,  “3 hours.”

“That sucks. Why don’t we both try to go to sleep?” I suggest.

“That sounds like a plan.” Taylor smiles.

He settles into his chair and shuts his eyes. I pull up the covers and shut my eyes. A couple minutes later I hear him start to snore slightly.

I open my eyes and look around. I’ve not really had any time to myself since I’ve been here. I’m in a purple colored room with little flowers painted all over the walls. I see the top of a tree outside my window so I’m guessing that the hospital is quite a few stories high. I’m a couple stories up, obviously. My door is a big wooden door and it’s shut.

I’m glad I don’t have to share a room with anyone. I think it would be quite annoying.

I try to get up out of my bed but I can’t get up with my broken leg. I hear people coming in so I throw my covers back on me, lay down, and act like I’m asleep.

“This is my worst case that I have right now.” I hear Dr. Pethers say quietly.

“What happened?” I hear another man ask.

“She was out with her boyfriend and they got into a very bad car wreck. The car was totaled. He didn’t make it. Their parents didn’t even know that they were even out. She came out with her left leg broken and a major concussion.” Dr. Pethers explains.

“Oh my goodness,” The other man says, “That’s awful. Does she know?”

“No, she doesn’t remember anything.” Dr. Pethers replies.

“That’s even worse.” The other man uttered.

Dr. Pethers sighs, “I know. I just wish I could do something.”

They stood there for a couple more minutes, not saying anything. Finally they leave.

After they shut the door I open my eyes and sit up. I sit there and ponder over what they said. I wish I had the answers to my own questions. If only I could remember. When Taylor wakes up I will ask him all of my questions.

I sit there for a while. Finally I get tired enough that I lay down and I rest my eyes.

“I wonder who my boyfriend is, or was.” I think sadly to myself. Then I’m asleep.

When I open my eyes again, Taylor is gone and in his place sits a girl. You could tell she had been crying. I realize she’s holding my hand and I yank back surprised.

She looks up suddenly and inhales sharply, “I- I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”

“Who are you?” I ask.

A sad look crosses over her face, “I’m Shelbey. Your best friend.”

I feel sorry for her and myself, “I have no idea who you are. I’m really sorry. I wish I could remember.”

       “It’s all right.” She sighs.

I know it isn’t but I pretend that it is anyways, “Yeah.”

“So how have you been?” Shelbey asks.

“I’ve been really tired and overwhelmed.” I say. I feel like I shouldn’t trust her, but she is my best friend right?

       “Oh, I’m sorry.” She says.

“It sucks because I don’t remember anything or know anyone.” I complain, hoping she’ll give me some answers.

“Yeah. Do you know what happened?” She asks.

“I overheard the doctor talking to someone about it earlier.” I admit.

       “What did you hear?”

“Dr. Pethers was saying how I was his worst case. Then he said something about a car wreck, my parents not knowing, and a boyfriend.” I spit out.

Her face changes completely once I mention the boyfriend part. I don’t understand why though.

       “Oh.” Is all she says.

“Could you tell me something? Anything?” I try since the victim stance wasn’t working.

“Yeah,” She sighs. “It might be a little long.”

“Okay, I don’t really care as long as I find something out.” I say.

“You had told me that afternoon that you and David had a plan to sneak out that night. He came and picked you up in his Dodge Charger about 10:30 PM. You were constantly texting me about what was going on. I was worried because you guys were being too dangerous. He had been racing for money. You both had been drinking too. Then finally you guys had settled down for the night. You and him had pulled over on the side of the road and started to make-out. There was a drunken semi driver rushing down the highway. The police were already chasing him. When he came upon you guys he lost control. The semi smashed into David’s side and killed him. They said when they pulled you out you were screaming and screaming and screaming for him. When they put you in the ambulance you kept talking about what happened. When they pulled him out he was alive. He lived for only 3 days. You got to the hospital and went into a coma. You were in it for almost a week. I was there when you woke up but they wouldn’t let me see you until today.”

I felt tears welling up in my eyes. It was terrible. Then I started to sob. Shelbey hugged me and held me in her arms until I stopped crying.

“I’m sorry. It’s just so sad. It’s my own story and I cried.” I finally say.

       “It’s alright.” She replies.

“Why wouldn’t anyone tell me?” I asked.

“They didn’t want to deal with you like this.” Shelbey tells me.

       “You’re kidding.” I say, offended.

       “Yes.” She says seriously.

“Oh.” I turn and look out the window.

“I’m sorry if I freaked you out. I was just teasing you. The real reason was because no one wanted you to go into shock, but I told them I wasn’t going to keep that from you if you asked.” She says.

       “Thanks.” I say.

“It’s what best friends do.” She smiles.

“I’m tired.” I say trying to make her go.

“Okay, I gotta go anyways.” She understands me.

Shelbey says her goodbyes and walks out of the room leaving me to my own devices.

I settle back down into my bed tired and exhausted from my busy, exhausting day.

The only thing I can think of before I go to sleep is that my boyfriend is dead.
