The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

22. Remy

I crossed the grass and looked up at the house. It looked like the piece of shit it had been back when I first saw it. That time seemed so long ago. I thought about what Vivian asked me. If I knew that man. I never answered.

I knew Clive Hylan. I knew how dangerous he was before, but I had no idea he was the man responsible for these disappearances. For taking Julia once before. I closed my eyes and tried to think.

Before I had time, however, the front door of the house burst open. A woman who looked to be in her mid-thirties came out. She scanned the yard and her eyes widened as they fell onto me. I froze.

“Remy?” she called, her green eyes hesitant. “I'm not doing anything, I swear. You can't arrest me for standing on my own porch.”

“Relax,” I said, holding my hands up. “I'm not going to arrest you.”

She pursed her lips and ran a hand through her red hair. “Put your gun down, then! What are you doing here with those sirens wailing?”

I winced. “I need your help. I'm looking for someone and he might be here. Do you know a man named Clive Hylan?”

Devan Hannigan narrowed her eyes. “Why? What do you want with Clive?”

I sighed and walked up the steps. When I was close enough to smell whatever perfume she was wearing, I said, “I have some questions for him concerning a serious matter. Now can you tell me where he is?”

I knew Clive was dead, but Devan clearly didn't, judging from her reaction. I had to keep calm and not scare her, otherwise she's lock herself in that house and never let me in.

“Do you have a young woman staying with you?” I asked softly.

“I don't understand,” she said. “Remy, what are you talking about? There's no one but Clive and me here.”

It was strange being called by my first name instead of what she should be calling me. I should be Detective Boyd to her, not Remy. But I suppose that's what I get for having her as an ex-girlfriend.

I took her response as a no.

“Listen, if you find Clive, call me.” I wanted more than anything to tell her the truth, but I wanted her to find out for herself what kind of man she was with. “Please,” I added as I turned around.

As my feet touched the grass, the door opened once more and a voice called out to me.

“I killed him,” Julia said weakly.

Then Devan screamed.
