The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

10. Remy

It was after midnight when I heard the buzzing. At first I thought it was a fly wandering around my head, but then I saw the light blinking when I opened my eyes. That was when I realized what it was: my cell phone and someone had sent me a text.

It checked the screen. I thought it was from Vivian, but the message told me otherwise. I looked at the clock and hit REDIAL on my phone. It rang once and a voice answered.

“Detective Boyd?” he said softly.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“If you read the text, then you know,” he said calmly.

“That's very cryptic, Mr. Tanner.” I turned the lamp on, flooding the room with light. “Now where's Vivian?”

“She's asleep. I took her phone. Well, borrowed is more like it. I'm a friend of Vivian's, and I want to hear what you have to say about Julia Owens. Have you found anything?”

“No,” I said. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “I mean, I'm not sure. Did Julia have a phone?”

“Yes,” he said. “I have it. I picked it up. I can bring it to the station if you want.”

“I'm not there at the moment, but I should get going, or my boss is going to start calling. Mr. Tanner, I need to ask you something.”

“Lewis,” he offered. “What might that be?”

“Okay, Lewis.” I placed the phone down and put him on speaker, then started to get dressed. “How long have you known Vivian?”

“A little more than a month,” he replied. “Why do you need to know that?”

“I was just curious,” I responded, slipping a white oxford shirt on. I pulled on my pants and stared at my phone, then I said, “Did she ever tell you about what she can do?”

A sharp inhale.

“Yes, I know about her power. She told us she showed you. We were impressed, mostly.”

“Mostly?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. I placed the phone to my ear again. “Who had an issue with it?” I still remember what she did, and I was completely speechless, among other things that I wasn't going to express openly.

But, then again, Vivian knew what I was keeping private.

Which made me curious, so I opened my mouth to ask my question.

“Are all of you like her, Lewis?”

Silence hung on the other end of the line. Then, quietly, “We are special like her, if that's what you're wondering, Detective Boyd.”

“That's interesting,” I murmured. “What can you do?”

Lewis chuckled. “I'd rather not discuss that over the phone. Can we meet?”

“Of course. When can you come down here? I have some time to kill.”

“Meet at the cafe where Julia was taken?” Lewis suggested. "There must be something the rest of us overlooked when we were there. What's better than a fresh pair of eyes, especially those of a cop?”
