The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

I got home after the sun rose. Graham was already awake, in the kitchen, making pancakes. That surprised me, because, well, he never cooked. He always liked other people to do it, or to go out and eat. But that's not what made me stop in my tracks.

What did that was Vivian; she was sitting on the counter beside him, swinging her legs, her hair brushed and in a ponytail. She looked up at me and held my gaze, but didn't say anything yet.

“You're awake,” I said softly, pushing my hands through my hair. “How are you feeling?”

Her eyes narrowed slightly. “How do you think I'm feeling?” She sounded mad. She leaped off the counter and put her hand out, a single flame dancing in her palm. “If you weren't trying to help me get my girlfriend back, I'd burn you for stealing my phone.”

It's not like you were using it, I thought.

Graham cleared his throat.

“What?” Vivian snapped, turning her head. “What was he thinking?”

“I think you need to talk to him,” Graham said, He didn't look at us, just kept cooking.

I sighed. “Look, I'm sorry, okay? But you're right about one thing: I am helping you out. I want to find Jules just as much as you do.”

If looks could kill, I would have dropped dead right then. She was staring at me like I'd said the worst thing ever. And she was trying not to cry. When she spoke, her voice was quiet, shaky.

“Her name is Julia, not Jules.”

I put a hand up. “Okay, okay. Calm down.”

For future reference, do not tell a girl who has pyrokinesis anything that she doesn't want to hear, or anything that will piss her off. Because, well, she'll probably just torch your ass. I waited for the flame to dissolve before trying again.

“I'm sorry.” I said softly. “I need to talk to you and Graham together. I went to see Detective Boyd last night. Because you wouldn't talk to him.”

Vivian opened her mouth to say something, presumably to tell me to fuck off, but instead she said, “I know. Graham told me. So what did he say? Did you find anything?”

I didn't have the heart to tell her we didn't find a fucking thing.
