The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

20. Julia

Sitting with my back to the wall, I waited.

I saw his body, still and broken. I expected him to get up and come toward me, with pieces of his brain and skull dropping onto the floor behind him as he went.

But he never moved. He was dead, and I was the one who killed him, without a second thought.

I closed my eyes and tried to calm my nerves. I knew Vivian and Detective Boyd would be here soon, and that meant I was going home. I was going to be with her again, in a safe place.

I pressed the phone to my ear. “Vi, I'm so tired.”

“Try to stay awake,” she told me softly. “We'll be there soon. Are you hurt at all?”

I looked down at my body. My clothes were dirty and torn, but other than that I could move each limb without cause for concern. I said, “No. I just need a shower.”

I glanced at the man who had taken me. I still didn't know anything about him, so I wanted to find something out. I stood slowly and walked over to the corpse, bent down and plucked his wallet out of his front pocket.

The only thing I found was 40 bucks and a driver's license. Just what I was looking for. I squinted at the name, not recognizing it. He looked younger in the photo. I shook my head.

“Hey,” I said, “does Detective Boyd know a man named Clive Hylan?”

I didn't get to hear anything else, because whatever was spoken was drowned out by a door slamming upstairs. I crept close to the stairwell and heard a voice calling for Clive.

It was a woman.
