The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

I woke with a missed call from Vivian. At first I didn't understand why she would call me if she was in the next room, but then I listened to the voicemail message left.

Lewis.

He said he was with that cop, that he had some news about Terry, and he would tell me when he got home. I glanced at the clock.

6:15AM.

The door to my room creaked open and someone stuck their head in. Even though the light outside was dim, I could see who it was.

Vivian.

“Are you awake?” she whispered.

“Hey,” I said, “you're alive.”

“Funny,” she said softly, shutting the door behind her. She crossed the room and sat on the edge of my bed. “Is everything alright?” she asked, turning her head and staring at me.

“I should be asking you that,” I told her, frowning. “How are you?”

“I feel like I slept for days,” she said. Her eyes looked empty, deep shadows under them. “Has anyone found anything?” Her voice was weak, like she knew the answer. She was losing hope, fast.

“Not yet,” I replied. I sat up straighter. “But Lewis called before. He's on his way home, and he has some news for us.”

“About Julia?” Vivian muttered.

I shook my head and her face fell more. “It's something about Terry. He sounded strange on the phone when he called.”

“But Terry's―”

“Dead, I know,” I finished for her. “But he was with Detective Boyd and―”

“What was he doing with him?”

“They're trying to find anything we missed about Julia's abduction I assume,” I answered calmly. I didn't want to make her more on edge.

Vivian's hands rested on her lap, and they tightened into fists until her knuckles were white. When her body started shaking, I moved close to her and touched her shoulder.

“Hey,” I said quietly, “it's okay to be okay. We'll find her.”

“I just hope she's alive when we do,” she whispered.
