The Removed [Book #2]

It's been a month since the three hunters and Terry's death. Vivian, Graham, and Julia, along with Lewis, have been staying at the Miller house. There has been little news on the missing girls, leaving Vivian to wonder if she should find them.

Then something happened that changed everything.

“What did you just say?” I asked.

I was sitting on the floor and though I could hear everything that was said, I wanted to make sure that last bit was right. Because that couldn't have been what Vivian said. It just couldn't.

“You didn't tell him?” Vivian asked Julia.

She shook her head and looked at me. “With everything going on, I didn't want to give you anything else to worry about. But, the man who is taking those girls, he took me too. I don't remember how I got away, I just wish I'd killed him, because I had my powers then. He wouldn't stand a chance.”

I digested everything she had just told me. In all the time I'd known her, Julia never said a word about it. Not to me. But she told a complete stranger. That was a brave move. We didn't know then if we could trust Vivian, but somehow Julia knew, and I never understood how.

I guess it was part of the soul mate thing.

“Why didn't you?” I asked after what seemed like hours of silence.

Lewis drank his tea, Vivian held Julia's hand, and Julia watched the TV. She answered my question without taking her eyes off the screen, almost like she couldn't face me.

“Because I didn't understand my full potential then. I just wanted to stay alive.” Now she looked at me, her violet eyes calm. “Isn't that what you wanted, Graham?”

“Yes,” I said, nodding. “But I wanted all of us to come out of this unscathed.”

“You knew that was impossible,” Lewis murmured. “You had to have known there would be some fallen after it was over. Jev wouldn't let anyone go without bruises, broken bones, or worse.”

“But the man called Grady killed Terry, not Jev,” Vivian said. “I was there. I saw it. Claudia was furious.”

“Grady was Claudia's brother,” Lewis said. “They were close. I'm surprised she didn't just flat out die of a broken heart right there.”

“She wanted me dead,” Vivian said.

“Well, she didn't get what she wanted, did she?” Julia said, kissing her cheek. “I'm so glad.”

“We all are,” I said, standing. I leaned against the couch, watching the TV. “So, uh, is anyone hungry? I don't think I have any food here.”

They all nodded. Lewis finished his tea and turned off the TV. The news had blown past the
case, and since we were talking, we missed whatever else there was. But I was sure they'd replay it later, if they had any leads.
