21. Scene 3

Nikki and Maria arrive at the café first. They sit down, the clock behind them reading 1PM. They wait.

Nikki: (looking at his watch, the clock behind them reading 1:10PM) they’re not coming.

Maria: They’re coming. And you don’t really care anyway, do you? We’ll just have something nice to eat and go back to Kenny’s if they don’t arrive. But remember what I told you, we’re here to try and fix the relationship, just don’t expect too much from them, OK? That way you won’t get hurt again.

Nikki nods and Maria follows his gaze to a man and a woman, both late fifties, who have just entered. Nikki stands and Maria follows his lead.

Nikki: Hi mum. Hi dad.

N. Mum: Hello there, Nikki, what brought you out of the woodwork after all these years?

Nikki: Was hoping we could talk. Maybe fix things.

N. Dad: We gonna stand up all day or we gonna actually eat?

Nikki sits down quickly, Maria again following his lead. His parents take their time, hanging their coat over the chair, taking sunglasses off etc.

N. Dad: (gesturing to Maria) and who might this be? New girlfriend?

Maria: Yes. Hi, I’m Maria.

N. Dad: (ignoring her and turning to Nikki) what is it with you and brunettes?

Nikki: (sarcastically) Oh I don’t know dad. Hang on, let me un-love her ‘cause she isn’t blonde…

N. Mum: (interrupting) shall we order?

Nikki nods and they peruse the menus in silence. They have soon decided and a waitress walks over.

Waitress: (getting out a notebook) are you ready to order?

N. Dad: Why would you get out a notebook if we hadn’t yet confirmed we were ready to order?

Nikki: (to waitress) ignore him. Yes we are. Me and Maria will share a margarita pizza, and mum?

N. Mum: I’ll have steak pie please.

N. Dad: Aye, me as well.

Waitress: And to drink?

N. Dad: Pint?

Waitress: I’m sorry but we don’t serve alcohol until the evening meals.

N. Dad: Then why the fuck am I here?

Nikki: To see your son, maybe? You know, the son that you always hated, always put down. The person you always said would never get anywhere? The person that you cast away the moment he could legally leave home? (turning to waitress) make that pizza to go and give him the bill. (turning back to Dad and grabbing Maria’s hand, leading her away) when you’ve learnt to respect me, the people in my life, and waitresses here to just do their job, maybe we can talk, (turning to Mum) and mum, when you stop siding with this man, maybe we can actually get along (he storms away, Maria being pulled behind)

They emerge outside and Maria wraps her arms around him in a hug.

Maria: (sobbing) I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

Nikki: It’s OK, Maria. Honestly. I’ve never known him to be so bad. It’s OK.

The scene fades outside the café.
