Extravagance

Tori Ortega was ordinary. She didn't ask for much, even though her parents could have bought the moon. She didn't ask for a boyfriend or really mess around with boys, until Issac. She didn't ask for any of what happened to her to happen to her, but once one bad thing happens, it spirals out of control.

7. Dinner Party

Tori had fallen right on top of Issac, she just started laughing and apologizing profusely.

“I’m so sorry” she said through a laugh still laying on the ground.

They were both laughing and laying on the ground next to each other. Mrs. Galmen walked out of the house.

“What are you two silly teenagers doing” she asked laughing along with them.

Tori and Issac started laughing even harder, but then Tori’s mom walked out of the house.

“Tori get off the ground and out of this bug infested backyard” Harriet ordered.

“Yes mother” she said getting up.

Tori walked straight to the table and just sat down at the table. The families walked into the dining room. Issac and Mrs. Galmen shot her a sympathetic look. Issac walked to the end Tori was at and sat down next to her.

“You ok” he asked quietly?

“Yea, I’m fine. It happens a lot” she replied.

“Do you just fall on every boy you meet” he asked her jokingly.

“No, but I am quite clumsy” she said through a smile.

Tori’s mom walked in with a big tray of food and then lead the prayer.

Tori tapped her matte gray nails against the table nervously as her mother and Mrs. Galmen were talking about Issac and her.

“So what High School is Issac attending” Harriet asked?

“West High, we decided it would be best if we sent him to a public school for this year. He only has one year left before college so we would rather spend the money on college instead of a private school this year” Jordan (Issac’s mom) replied.

“Oh, that’s where Tori is going as well! I wanted to put her in a private school but she insisted it would be a better experience if she went somewhere public” Harriet lied.

Tori had never cared where she went to school, she just wanted to go through it all and get to college and out of the house. Often her when her Dad and Mom got in fights words that were thrown were,

“Why do we have a 5 year old in a private school and a 17 year old in a public school” her Father would ask?

“Because I want to raise Cora right, it’s too late for Victoria” Harriet would shout.

“Are you saying that you don’t want Cora to be like Tori? We raised her right” George would shout back.

“And she ended up being the biggest failure of my life” her mother would reply, her harsh words stinging Tori.

“Tori, Tori” she heard Issac say.

“Oh, sorry, what was the question” she asked, slightly embarrassed.

“My Mom asked what you were thinking about majoring in” he said.

“Well, I’m not sure yet, but I was thinking about majoring in creative writing and minoring or majoring in photography” Tori said.

“But, George and I are still trying to persuade her to major in law at harvard, maybe take over the family business later” Harriet said.

“We have always been more of a ‘do what you want and we will support you’ kind of family” Jordan fired at her.

Tori and Issac sat back in there chairs and watched as Harriet tried to come up with a response.

“We just don’t want to see her throw her life away on some silly dream. We consider writing and photography more of a hobby” Harriet said with offense.

“We will be leaving now” Jordan said, as she got up with her kids and walked towards the door.
