Well there’s a haberdashery there and further down Purvis the baker shop then at the end that’s the butcher shop.

“Is that a pub next to it?”

“Yes, that’s the Robin Hood Inn.

Further on is the Collingwood Arms across the road is George Cummings pork butchers; he makes a mean savaloy and pea’s pudding sandwich.

“Why is that pub called the Collingwood?

“Well Lord Admiral Haratio Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar was mortally wounded and Cuthbert Collingwood who was his second in command took over and won the battle but it was Nelson who got all the credit.”

Collingwood was a very modest, brave young man. He was very patriotic and led his men into many battles after that. He was killed in Minorca in Spain in 1810 he was fifty eight years old.

That was no age was it Geordie?

“In those days’ life expectancy was thirty five so you could say he had a good life.

“How come you know so much?

“Because I’m a historian; I go around the country giving lectures these days.

“I was a very young history student when the war broke out and I went to enlist; I was turned away because they said I had flat feet; so I joined the Merchant Navy. The HMS Argent was hit by a German Torpedo from a U boat; the rest is history.

“Do you have a degree then?

“Yes, eight months after I was discharged I went to Newcastle University and completed my degree and passed with honours.

I have a lecture tomorrow in Sheffield; I have to leave early in the morning to catch the train at Central Station.

“At what time do you leave?

“Around five o’clock.

Look I have to get a paper from the news agency then call in to the bookmakers.

George walked into Peart’s and bought a late Evening Chronicle he quickly scanned the results section and smiled.

Turning to Rose he told her to wait as he slipped into Chamber’s.

George handed his betting slips over and the woman behind the counter calculated his winnings but George already knew that he’d won over two week’s wages.

She counted the money out in front of him and he folded it up and put the notes into his wallet and the loose coins in his pocket.

Are you not having another bet Geordie asked the woman?

“No not today; I’ve ridden my luck for one day and it’s not every day that you win one hundred and seventy pounds.

“Don’t forget the seventeen and a tanner as well.

“I won’t see you later because I’m off to Sheffield tomorrow, but I might spend thirty bob on Saturday.

“Well enjoy your trip to Sheffield.”

“I will; bye for now.”

“George came out of the doors all smiles as he joined Rose and he walked back the way they had come with the shopping.
