The horses walked around the paddock as the commentator introduced each horse in this three mile race over the jumps.

“A Call to Arms” was the favourite to win at 2-1 the horses made there way down to the start General Custer came down in the betting which mean that there was money being placed on him. He was now at 33-1.

Again the horses walked around until they were under starters orders a flag went up and they were off and running  “Mystic Fortune” took an early lead as the came to the first jump which they all got over safely. “General Custer” was last at this point and Mavis had a smile on her face. “Champagne Charlie” and “A Call to Arms” were second and third. “Just in Time” and “Hay Maker” joint forth. The horses turned left then came to the next fence which “Hay Maker” hit hard and it unseated the jockey.

General Custer moved up into forth by the sixth fence “A Call to Arms” was given a reminder by his jockey who was finding the soft ground not to his liking. “Mystic Fortune” was out in front by two lengths as they cleared the next fence.

“Champagne Charley” stumbled at the water jump and was limping badly so he was pulled up. Mystic Fortune seizes his chance, pressing home his advantage A Call to Arms rallied then drew, level General Custer went into third place and the turned to do the second circuit. The smile was now shifting from Mavis’s face. The commentator was saying that this was now a two horse race between Mystic fortune, and A Call to Arms. They came to the next fence and A call to Arms hit the fence hard and fell back giving General Custer a chance to take second place there was only four fences left in the race “A Call to Arms had nothing left, Just in Time was finding the going too much for him he fell back to some six lengths behind the other horses. The water jump was next and they all got over safely Mystic Fortune and General Custer came down the finishing straight neck and neck the jockey of “A Call to Arms” was whipping his horse to try and get back but the horse was spent. “Mystic Fortune” had one fence to jump  and the jockey steadied himself to jump it which gave “General Custer” the chance to go in front it kicked on and went four lengths clear Mystic Fortune tried to get back at General Custer but it was too late General Custer took the race  by two clear lengths.

George stood up and said to Mavis; “I guess this wasn’t Custer’s last stand after all.

He went next door to the paper shop to buy popcorn and some chocolates for the cinema then he made his way home.

As he got to the gate Mrs Best came out of her house and came to the gate.

“Are you going to tell that girl to turn down that racket? “ My husband is trying to sleep.”

“Well if your husband was working; then I would Mrs Best; he isn’t is he? So no I will not, good day to you.” George closed the gate then went inside.

“Rose how are you doing; are you ready to go?

“I’m fixing my hair love; I won’t be long.

“George went to Cathy’s room and knocked on the door.”

“Come in said Cathy so George went in to the sound of Apache by the Shadows.

“This is another omen I’m sure my name is George, General George Armstrong Custer fought against the Indians, and one of my dogs is called Black Shadow.
