“Come on lets introduce you to the neighbourhood Rose.

“What about my face?

“Here you can wear this head scarf it will cover your cheek.”

“You have a lovely home here Geordie.”

George put on his coat then the two of then headed out; George pointed out the allotment garden before heading in the other direction towards Bridge Road North

George turned left and pointed out the café owned by Sam Capaldi who was also an Italian ice cream man. Next to it was a fish and chip shop around the corner a bakers then Peart’s news agency then next door was Chambers bookmakers. There were two grocer shops and George took Rose into the first.

“Hello Geordie, said Shirley Simpson; is this your girlfriend?

“No, this is Rose, Shirley she is my house keeper.”

“George looked at Rose apologetically then led her around the shop with a basket he put in some Sunblessed sliced bread. He bought Stork margarine then some Robertson’s Marmalade. Would you mind if I bought a few things; I left my toiletries behind when I left?

“No Rose not at all; please get what you need.”

George bought some bacon and ham and some peas pudding from the deli counter.

“I need a dozen eggs too he asked Shirley.

She opened the card board box and checked to make sure all the eggs were intact before handing them over.

“I see your house keeper is from Scotland; what brings you here?

“Rose looked a Shirley right in the eyes as she answered; “They let us over the wall now you know.”

“What wall is that then said Shirley laughing.

“The Berlin Wall; you have to climb quit high up to get over it Shirley.”

“Is that near Glasgow then?

Stop teasing said George as he explained

“The Roman Wall; you know, the one Emperor Hadrian built in 128 AD.

“Oh that one she lied.”

“She put her head down then tried to reckon up how much the shopping was finally after three attempts she got it right.”

Shirley placed the shopping into George’s bag that he’d brought then said goodbye flashing her eyes at him as he escorted Rose out of the shop.

“I think she fancies you said Rose.”

“Sorry but she’s not my type.”

“What is your type then?

“Someone more refined I think.

They went into Michael Murray’s fruit and vegetable shop and bought some potatoes.

“Is bacon, egg, and chips alright for dinner tonight?

“Do you have some HP sauce?

“I most certainly have Rose.”

“Then I would be honoured to eat dinner in your house tonight.”

They both looked at each other then burst out laughing.

Looking down Front Street Rose asked what the other shops were.
